L'exposé — informer, pas convaincre: An exposé is part of the theme Text types (2.3). It is a structured, informative presentation (oral or written) whose job is to inform and explain — NOT to persuade. You announce a plan, develop two or three points illustrated with examples, then conclude. The register stays neutral and informative. At l'épreuve 1 (Paper 1) you choose it when the task says « expliquez / présentez / informez ». Its closest cousin is the discours (2.3.5), but the discours moves the audience to act, whereas the exposé simply makes a topic clear and understood.

Un exposé FAIT… (informer)
- annonce un plan (« Mon exposé comportera trois parties »)
- développe 2–3 points illustrés par des exemples

Un exposé n'est PAS… (≠ discours)
- un texte qui pousse à agir, avec slogan et appel à l'action (le discours)
- une analyse à deux faces avec une opinion finale (l'essai)
- un récit privé à la première personne (le journal intime)
Discours vs exposé — ne les confonds pas: Both announce a plan and use « premièrement… deuxièmement… », so it's easy to mix them up. The test is the purpose: a discours wants the audience to do something (slogan, « rejoignez-nous ! », call to action). An exposé only wants them to understand — no campaigning, no appeal. If the task says « présentez / expliquez / informez », write an exposé in a neutral tone; if it says « convainquez / mobilisez », write a discours. Matching purpose to text type is exactly what Criterion C (conceptual understanding) rewards.

Follow the steps below and you never forget the plan announcement or the conclusion — both are easy Criterion C marks.

Introduce + announce the plan
Greet briefly and say what you'll cover. « Aujourd'hui, je vais vous présenter… Mon exposé comportera trois parties. »

Develop point by point
Take each part in turn, flagged. « Premièrement… Deuxièmement… Enfin… » Keep a neutral, factual tone.

Illustrate with examples
Back each point with a concrete example or a figure. « Par exemple… / L'an dernier, le lycée a recyclé… »

Conclude + thank
Sum up the key points; do NOT add an opinion or a call to action. « Pour conclure… Je vous remercie de votre attention. »

Garde le ton neutre: An exposé informs, so resist the urge to argue or to urge action — no slogan, no « rejoignez-nous ! ». The neutral, plan-then-points-then-conclusion shape is the signature of the text type, and staying inside it protects Criterion C.

Exposé — le tri des déchets au lycée: Bonjour à tous. Aujourd'hui, je vais vous présenter le fonctionnement du tri des déchets dans notre lycée. Mon exposé comportera trois parties.
Premièrement, je décrirai les bacs disponibles : un bac bleu pour le papier, un bac jaune pour le plastique et un bac vert pour le verre.
Deuxièmement, j'expliquerai le parcours des déchets : ils sont collectés chaque semaine, puis transportés vers un centre de tri où ils sont recyclés.
Enfin, je présenterai quelques chiffres : l'an dernier, notre lycée a recyclé près de deux tonnes de papier.
Pour conclure, le tri repose sur des bacs simples, un ramassage régulier et la participation de chacun. Je vous remercie de votre attention.
