Key concepts in Sharing the Planet

Key Idea: Sharing the planet is about the world we all share: the environment, rights, peace, equality, globalization, ethics, and life in the city and the country. You use these words in reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Phrases for every lesson

  • Give your view: {{En mi opinión… / Creo que…|In my opinion… / I think…}}
  • Weigh two sides: {{Por un lado… por otro lado…|On the one hand… on the other hand…}}
  • Link your ideas: {{sin embargo, por lo tanto|however, therefore}}
  • When you write: choose the text type and tone, then plan a hook, your ideas and an ending.

The environment

  • Words: {{el medio ambiente, el cambio climático|the environment, climate change}}, {{reciclar, contaminar, ahorrar|to recycle, to pollute, to save}}, {{la contaminación, la sostenibilidad|pollution, sustainability}}
  • Debate: can one person make a difference, or must governments and companies act? Do small changes help?

Human rights

  • Words: {{el derecho, la libertad|right, freedom}}, {{defender, firmar una petición|to defend, to sign a petition}}, {{la discriminación|discrimination}}
  • Debate: can young people change things? How do you defend a cause peacefully?

Peace & conflict

  • Words: {{la paz, el conflicto, el diálogo|peace, conflict, dialogue}}, {{la convivencia, el respeto, la tolerancia|coexistence, respect, tolerance}}, {{discutir, llegar a un acuerdo|to argue, to reach an agreement}}
  • Debate: dialogue and respect, or confrontation?

Equality

  • Words: {{la igualdad, la desigualdad, la diversidad|equality, inequality, diversity}}, {{la brecha salarial, tratar por igual|the pay gap, to treat equally}}
  • Debate: the pay gap; discrimination or diversity; equal treatment at school and at work.

Globalization

  • Words: {{la globalización, el comercio, la marca|globalization, trade, brand}}, {{la cadena, el negocio local, el consumo|chain, local business, consumption}}
  • Debate: global brands or local businesses? Cultural exchange or a loss of identity?

Ethics

  • Words: {{la ética, el valor, la justicia|ethics, value, justice}}, {{la honestidad, la responsabilidad|honesty, responsibility}}, {{el consumo responsable, el comercio justo|responsible consumption, fair trade}}
  • Debate: cheap products and their hidden cost; honesty; buying responsibly.

Urban & rural

  • Words: {{la ciudad, el pueblo, el campo|city, village, the countryside}}, {{el ayuntamiento, el atasco, el espacio verde|town council, traffic jam, green space}}
  • Debate: city or countryside? Pollution or peace and quiet?
Each theme needs the same three things: its own words, an opinion with a reason, and linking words between your ideas.

What does «ahorrar» mean? To save.

How do you say "to sign a petition"? «firmar una petición».

What is «la brecha salarial»? The pay gap.

What is «el comercio justo»? Fair trade.

What does «el atasco» mean? A traffic jam.
