Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Around social relationships, the common debates are: online friendships vs face-to-face ones, the distance between generations, and whether technology brings families closer or pushes them apart. Take a position and back it up.

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • En mi opinión… / Desde mi punto de vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Me parece que… / Creo que… — It seems to me that… / I think that…
  • Lo más importante es… — The most important thing is…
  • Por un lado… por otro lado… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Estoy (totalmente) de acuerdo con… — I (completely) agree with…

Relaciones a distancia (drawbacks)

Phones and people

Friends and other cultures

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Social organization)

Diary entries and blogs about a family argument or a misunderstanding follow this chain.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog — the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Then we'll do one exam question together.

  2. Find it in the text.
Reading technique: For a según el texto (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.

Email structure — 6 steps

1

Subject line

A short, friendly subject. Asunto: ¡Tus abuelos y los míos!

2

Greeting

Greet your friend by name. ¡Hola, Pablo!

3

Body

React to his news and tell your own experience. En tu último correo me dijiste… A mí me pasaba lo mismo.

4

Advice / request

Suggest what to do, with tú commands, and ask him to reply. ¿Por qué no pruebas…? Escúchalos…

5

Friendly close

A warm sign-off. Un abrazo muy fuerte,

6

Signature

Just your first name. Marta

Subject → ¡Hola! → Body → Advice → Un abrazo → Name

Modelo: los 6 pasos en ~100 palabras

El correo, paso a paso

  1. Asunto: ¡Tus abuelos y los míos!
  2. ¡Hola, Pablo!
  5. Un abrazo muy fuerte,
  6. Marta
Por qué funciona — why it works: A strong informal email does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Imperfect vs preterite: miraba / me enseñó
  • Tú commands with pronouns: escúchalos, enséñales
  • Suggestion: ¿Por qué no pruebas…?

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: tells the relationship AND gives advice
  • Advice answers Pablo's actual problem

C — Conceptual /6

  • Email conventions: subject line, ¡Hola, Pablo!, sign-off and name
  • Tú register and questions to the reader
  • Warm, chatty tone for a friend
Escucha como en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to a voicemail Pablo leaves a friend before a graduation party. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(According to the audio, where does Pablo want to hold the party, and why?)

¡Hola, Sofía! Soy Pablo.

It's Pablo. I'm calling to organise my sister's graduation party. I'd thought of holding it at my grandparents' house, because they have a very big garden and they're really excited about it. Can you help me prepare the food on Saturday afternoon? If it works for you, call the other friends and tell them to bring music. The most important thing is that we're all together. A hug and we'll talk soon!

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.

True or false? Tick one, then your answer with words as they appear in the text. Both parts are needed for the mark.
