La versión corta: ‘El amor’ no es un mensaje; es solo un tema. El tema es aquello de lo que trata el texto; el mensaje es lo que el autor afirma sobre ello, y se expresa con una frase entera.

‘El amor’ no es un mensaje; es solo un tema.

Fíjate en la diferencia. Si te pregunto de qué trata un poema y respondes ‘del amor’, has nombrado el tema: una sola palabra, aquello de lo que se habla. Pero el autor no escribe un poema entero solo para decir ‘el amor existe’. Escribe para afirmar algo: que el amor duele, que salva, que no dura. Eso —lo que el autor sostiene sobre el tema— es el mensaje, y no cabe en una palabra: necesita una frase. Distinguir ambas cosas es justo lo que separa una lectura superficial de una lectura atenta.

Del tema al mensaje, con un ejemplo

El tema

Es el asunto, en una o dos palabras: el amor, el poder, la migración, la infancia, la muerte. Responde a ‘¿de qué trata?’. Por sí solo no dice nada: dos autores pueden escribir sobre ‘la guerra’ y sostener ideas opuestas.

El mensaje

Es lo que el autor afirma sobre ese tema, formulado como una frase completa: ‘la guerra destruye tanto al vencedor como al vencido’. Ahí ya hay una postura, una idea que se puede defender, discutir o interpretar.

El paso clave: Cuando te pidan el mensaje, no respondas con una palabra. Convierte el tema en una afirmación: ¿qué sostiene el autor sobre él? El mensaje siempre cabe en una oración: ‘El autor sugiere que…’. Si tu respuesta es una sola palabra, todavía te has quedado en el tema.

  • Lo que cuenta es que interpretes qué afirma el autor sobre ese tema.
  • Escribe el mensaje como una oración con verbo.
  • Si te cabe en una palabra, todavía es un tema.

Ojo con esto: No confundas resumir con interpretar el mensaje. ‘Una mujer pone dos platos’ es un resumen de lo que ocurre; el mensaje es lo que el autor afirma con ello. Y no te quedes en la palabra suelta (‘el duelo’): eso es el tema, no el mensaje.
