  • Spotting the devices
  • Noting voice & style for the oral
  • Common pitfalls
Who tells it, and how it's written: Two questions unlock almost any literary extract for the HL oral: Wer erzählt? (who is telling the story — the narrative voice / point of view) and Wie ist es geschrieben? (how it's written — the tone, register and devices). The plot tells you what happens; voice and style tell you how the author makes you feel it.
die Erzählperspektive / die Erzählhaltung
the narrative perspective — who tells the story and from where
der Blickwinkel / der Standpunkt
the point of view (first/third person, what they can see)
der/die Erzähler(in)
the narrator (the voice inside the work — NOT the author)
der Stil
the style — the author's characteristic way of writing
der Ton / die Stimmung
the tone / mood — the attitude or feeling the writing gives off (sad, ironic, tender…)
das Register
the register — formal, informal, poetic, colloquial language
das Stilmittel / das rhetorische Mittel
the literary/stylistic device (metaphor, simile, image…)
die Bildsprache / die bildliche Sprache
figurative (non-literal) language
Voice + style work together: Think of the work as a voice (eine Stimme) speaking in a particular style (ein Stil). The voice decides whose eyes you see through; the style — tone, register and devices — decides what the words make you feel. The oral rewards comments on both.

Die Perspektive / der Blickwinkel

  • Wer erzählt? — Ich- oder Er-/Sie-Erzähler
  • Wie viel weiß der Erzähler?

Der Ton und das Register

  • der Ton — traurig, ironisch, zärtlich…
  • das Register — formell, umgangssprachlich, poetisch

Die Stilmittel

  • Metapher, Vergleich, Bild
  • Symbol, Personifikation
Why this matters: When the examiner asks «Wie würdest du den Stil des Autors beschreiben?», a strong answer names the voice (die Erzählperspektive), the tone (der Ton), and one device (ein Stilmittel) — with a short quotation. This micro gives you the vocabulary to do exactly that.

First step: spot the pronouns: To find the narrative voice, look at the pronouns and verb endings. An «ich / mir / mein» voice is first person (Ich-Erzähler); an «er / sie / Clara» voice is third person (Er-/Sie-Erzähler). This one check answers «Wer erzählt?» almost every time.
Erzähltyp (German)How to spot it / what it can see
der Ich-Erzähler (ich)Uses «ich, mir, mein»; a character tells their own story — sees only what they know.
der Er-/Sie-Erzähler (er/sie)Uses «er, sie, sein/ihr»; an outside voice tells the story of others.
der auktoriale (allwissende) ErzählerThird person that knows everything, including characters' thoughts and feelings.
der personale ErzählerThird person tied to ONE character — we see only through that figure's eyes.
Allwissend = «weiß alles»: An omniscient / authorial narrator (der auktoriale, allwissende Erzähler) can enter any character's mind: «Lucia lächelte, aber innerlich hatte sie Angst». If the narrator tells you a character's hidden feelings, the voice is auktorial/allwissend.

  • Intimer, subjektiver.

  • Distanzierter, panoramischer.
Name the voice precisely: Don't just say «third person». Say «ein auktorialer (allwissender) Erzähler» or «ein Ich-Erzähler» — the precise label shows the examiner you understand point of view.

The five devices you'll actually use: You don't need a long list. These five cover almost everything an oral asks about. Learn the German name, the rule, and a tiny example for each.
die Metapher
metaphor — calls one thing another directly: «die Zeit ist ein Dieb» (time is a thief)
der Vergleich
simile — compares with «wie»: «treu wie ein Hund» (faithful as a dog)
personification — gives human traits to a thing: «das Meer atmete» (the sea breathed)
Metapher vs Vergleich — the one rule: A Vergleich uses «wie» (or «schien»/«gleicht»): treu wie ein Hund. A Metapher drops the «wie» and says it is the thing: die Zeit ist ein Dieb. If you see «wie», it's a simile; if not, it's a metaphor.

  1. Personifikation. «Das Meer atmete langsam… wie ein altes Tier» gives the sea a human/animal action — it breathes. The sea is made to feel alive and tired.
  2. Vergleich. «wie ein altes Tier» and «treu wie Hunde» use «wie» — these are similes: the sea is like an old animal, the waves like faithful dogs.
  3. Bild / Metapher. «Der Himmel… schien eine Decke zu sein, die gleich über das Dorf fallen würde» is a vivid image (a metaphor of the sky as a heavy blanket) that creates a feeling of pressure and gloom — it matches Lucia's mood.
  4. Der Ton. All these devices build a melancholischer Ton (a melancholy, weary tone): a tired sea, a heavy sky, a day that leaves «ohne mich um Erlaubnis zu bitten». Naming the tone ties the devices together.
Device-spotting technique: Use the same move as for close reading: name the device → quote it → say its effect. Name, quote, effect.
Add voice & style to your extract sheet: When you prepare an extract for the oral, record its voice and style alongside theme and character. Three quick notes turn a description into analysis.

What to note about voice & style — 4 steps

1

Die Erzählperspektive

Ich- or Er-/Sie-Erzähler? Allwissend? «ein auktorialer (allwissender) Erzähler».

2

Der Ton und das Register

One adjective for the feeling + the register. «melancholischer Ton, poetisches Register».

3

Ein Stilmittel mit Zitat

Name ONE device you can quote. «Personifikation: «das Meer atmete»».

4

Die Wirkung

What the device/voice does to the reader. «lässt die Landschaft die Gefühle Lucias widerspiegeln».

Perspektive → Ton → Stilmittel → Wirkung

One sentence per element, in German: Keep the notes as ready-made German sentences you can speak: Perspektive, Ton, ein Stilmittel, Wirkung. Four short sentences are enough to discuss the style of any extract confidently.

Name devices precisely, comment on effect: Marks are lost when students mix up the devices, confuse narrator with author, or name a device without saying what it does. Compare the habits that score with the ones that don't.

Vergleich ≠ Metapher; Erzähler ≠ Autor: Two classic slips: (1) if it has «wie», it's a Vergleich, not a metaphor; (2) the «ich» of a first-person novel is the Erzähler, never «der Autor». Get these two right and your style comments instantly sound expert.

[2 marks]
