HL: eine Präsentation über einen literarischen Auszug: Use the presentation shape here, but remember the HL stimulus is a literarischer Auszug from one of your two works, not a Foto. So your Einleitung situates the extract within the work, your Hauptteil describes and interprets it, and your Abschluss relates it to the work’s themes. Die Präsentation = your prepared opening: The presentation (die Präsentation) is the prepared opening of your Individual Oral — about 3–4 minutes of uninterrupted speaking on your literarischer Auszug (at HL; the SL version speaks on a visual stimulus, der Bildimpuls), before your teacher joins in. The secret to a strong presentation is shape: give it a clear structure (einleiten → beschreiben → deuten & Meinung → mit dem Thema verbinden → abschließen) so it fills the time without rambling. You plan this shape in the 15 minutes of preparation — as ideas and key vocabulary (Stichwörter), never a full script.

Shape fills the time — rambling doesn't: A clear shape is what makes your 3–4 minutes feel full and confident. Without a structure you either dry up after 30 seconds or ramble off-topic. Plan the five moves in your prep time (einleiten, beschreiben, deuten, verbinden, abschließen) and your presentation almost speaks itself.
Five parts that fit ~3–4 minutes: Think of your presentation as five short parts, each a sentence or two (the middle parts a little longer). Together they fill about 3–4 minutes and make sure you describe AND interpret the image and link it to the theme — the moves the examiner is listening for.

Describe AND interpret — never just one: The most common way to lose Message marks is to only describe (list what you see — „es gibt ein Kind, es gibt einen Baum…“) or, more rarely, to only interpret (give opinions with no description). A strong presentation does both — and always links to the theme. The five-part shape forces you to include every move.

Five moves, in order: Build your presentation in the same order every time: einleiten, beschreiben, deuten, verbinden, abschließen (introduce, describe, interpret, link, round off). Practise this routine on any photo and you'll never freeze — you always know what comes next.

Structure your 3–4 minutes

Introduce the image

Open with one clear sentence saying what the image shows — „Das Foto zeigt…“ / „Auf dem Bild sieht man…“ — so the examiner knows your topic straight away.

Describe the key elements

Pick the few details that matter and describe them in order: „Im Vordergrund… im Hintergrund…“. Don't list every object — choose the meaningful ones.

Interpret & give your view

Say what the image means or suggests and add your opinion: „Ich glaube, das Bild zeigt… meiner Meinung nach…“. This is where you earn Message marks.

Link to the theme

Connect the stimulus to one of the five themes: „Das hängt mit dem Thema … zusammen, weil…“. Naming the theme shows you understood the image.

Round off (hand over)

Close with a short final sentence that opens the discussion: „Zusammenfassend… ich würde gern mehr über … sprechen“ — a clean hand-over to your teacher.

Time the middle, not the ends: Your Einleitung and Abschluss are one sentence each. Spend most of the 3–4 minutes on the Beschreibung, Deutung and Verbindung zum Thema — that's where the marks are. Practise out loud with a timer so 3–4 minutes feels natural.

  1. Einleitung: „Das Foto, das ich kommentieren möchte, zeigt mehrere Kinder, die zusammen in einer kleinen Stadtteilbibliothek Geschichten lesen.“
  2. Beschreibung: „Im Vordergrund sitzen drei Kinder auf dem Boden; im Hintergrund sieht man volle Bücherregale und eine Bibliothekarin, die lächelt.“
  3. Deutung & Meinung: „Ich glaube, das Bild zeigt, wie das Lesen Menschen verbindet; meiner Meinung nach sind Bibliotheken sehr wertvolle Orte für eine Gemeinschaft.“
  4. Verbindung zum Thema: „Das hängt mit dem Thema Soziale Organisation zusammen, weil es um den Zugang zu Kultur und Bildung geht.“
  5. Abschluss: „Zusammenfassend finde ich das Bild sehr positiv; ich würde gern mehr über die Rolle der Bibliotheken heutzutage sprechen.“
Each move is short — keep moving: Notice how each move is only a sentence or two. You never get stuck because you always know the next move. If you blank, just ask yourself: have I beschrieben (described), gedeutet (interpreted), mit dem Thema verbunden (linked to the theme) and abgeschlossen (rounded off)? Move to the part you haven't done yet.

Good decisions vs costly mistakes: Most weak presentations fail on structure and timing, not on German: reading a script, rambling with no shape, or being far too short or too long. Here's the contrast.

If you're drying up, name the next move: If you run out of words mid-presentation, don't panic — silently ask which of the five parts you haven't done yet and do it. There's always a next move: deuten (interpret), mit dem Thema verbinden (link to the theme), or abschließen (round off). Structure is your safety net.
