Konjunktiv II — the polite, hypothetical mood: Konjunktiv II (the subjunctive II / conditional) is the German verb mood for things that are hypothetical, wished-for or politely framed — not stated as fact. In this micro you learn how to build it and its two everyday jobs: being polite (Könnten Sie…? Ich hätte gern…) and talking about the unreal (Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich…). The everyday form is simply «würde + Infinitiv»; a handful of common verbs have their own short form instead (wäre, hätte, könnte).

Why it matters: Konjunktiv II is the single clearest marker of polite, mature German. Replacing a blunt Ich will einen Kaffee with Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee instantly lifts the register of your speaking and writing — exactly what Criterion A and Criterion C reward.
Default: «würde + Infinitiv». Six verbs you just know.: Build Konjunktiv II in two ways: (1) the everyday form — conjugate würde and send the Infinitiv to the end (ich würde spielen); (2) for a short list of very common verbs, use their own synthetic form instead of *würde* — these you learn by heart: sein → wäre, haben → hätte, the modals können → könnte, müssen → müsste, mögen → möchte, wollen → wollte. The synthetic forms come from the Präteritum stem + Umlaut + -e endings**.

The two-track rule: Track 1 (almost every verb): würde + Infinitiv (ich würde lernen). Track 2 (six high-frequency verbs): the short form — wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, möchte, wollte. Never combine them: it's ich würde gehen OR ich wäre, never ich würde sein.

Two jobs: be polite, or talk about the unreal: As a B-level student you need Konjunktiv II for two things. (1) Politeness — soften a request or offer: Könnten Sie…?, Ich hätte gern…, Würden Sie bitte…? (2) The hypothetical — wishes and «if» situations that aren't real: Ich würde gern…, An deiner Stelle würde ich…, Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich…. Spot the shape and the form follows.

- Irreale Bedingung — «Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen.» (If I were rich, I'd travel.)
«wenn …, würde …»: In an unreal wenn-sentence, the wenn-clause sends its verb to the end and the main clause usually takes würde + Infinitiv: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen*. Notice hätte (synthetic) in the wenn-part and würde lesen* in the main part.

Build it out loud: For most verbs, just say würde + the infinitive (würde reisen, würde lernen). For the six high-frequency ones, reach straight for the short form — wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, möchte, wollte — because they appear in almost every polite or hypothetical sentence.

The slips to watch for: Two mistakes dominate. (1) Saying «würde sein» or «würde haben» instead of the short forms wäre / hätte. (2) Forgetting the Infinitiv goes to the end with würde (Ich würde gehen nach Hause ✗ → Ich würde nach Hause gehen ✓). Compare the right version with the typical mistake.

Short forms + infinitive at the end: Keep two habits: reach for the short forms (wäre, hätte, könnte) for those six verbs, and with würde push the Infinitiv to the very end of the clause. Get those right and your Konjunktiv II will read like a native's.
