The brochure (la brochure) as a text type: A brochure (une brochure / un dépliant) is part of the theme Text types (2.3). It is a short promotional text that invites a wide audience to do something — join a club, visit a place, sign up for an event. On Paper 1 you choose it when the task tells you to promote or advertise something. The key idea: a catchy title/slogan, an inviting intro, sections with headings and bullet points, concrete practical details, and a clear call to action — all in a lively, selling tone with no greeting and no sign-off (it isn't a letter).
une brochure / un dépliant
a brochure / a leaflet
un slogan
a slogan / a catchy line
un titre accrocheur
a catchy headline / title
une rubrique (avec un intertitre)
a section (with a heading)
une puce / une liste à puces
a bullet / a bullet-point list
un registre persuasif
a persuasive register (it sells the idea)
un appel à l'action
a call to action (inscris-toi, viens, découvre)

A brochure HAS…

  • un titre accrocheur ou un slogan (« Découvrez… ! »)
  • des rubriques avec intertitres et des puces (✓)
  • des verbes à l'impératif qui s'adressent au lecteur
  • un appel à l'action et des infos pratiques

A brochure is NOT…

  • un message personnel à un ami (un courriel)
  • une analyse à deux faces d'un sujet (un essai)
  • un titre objectif + des paragraphes d'actualité (un reportage)
How you'll recognise it: The task asks you to promote something: « Rédige une brochure pour… », « Conçois un dépliant qui encourage… », « Fais la promotion d'un événement » → a brochure. If it said « Écris à ton ami(e) » you'd switch to an informal email (a different text type). Always read what the task wants the text to do first — that direct, selling appeal to a wide audience is exactly what the examiner rewards in Criterion C (conceptual understanding). Two single-sheet cousins have their own micro (2.3.10 — Tract & dépliant): the tract campaigns with a slogan + call to action, the dépliant informs with folded panels; the brochure promotes and develops in a longer booklet.

Persuasive and practical, addressed to the reader: A brochure is persuasive and practical: use short, punchy sentences, direct appeals to the reader (questions, the imperative — « Découvrez », « Profitez », « Inscris-toi »), and concrete details. Sound enthusiastic and helpful, not academic. Consistency matters — a flat, wordy, essay-like tone breaks the text type and costs you Criterion C. There is no greeting and no sign-off: a brochure is not a letter.

Too flat / wrong (avoid)

  • « À mon avis, ce club est plutôt intéressant. »
  • « Le présent document analyse les activités. »
  • « Dans l'attente de votre réponse, cordialement. »

Persuasive & practical (use)

  • « Découvrez le club fait pour vous ! »
  • « Qu'est-ce qu'on vous propose ? ✓ Ateliers ✓ Sorties »
  • « Inscris-toi dès aujourd'hui ! Appelle le 01 23 45 67 89. »
Make it easy to scan: A brochure is scanned, not read line by line. Break it into short rubriques with intertitres (headings) and bullet points (✓), and finish with a clear invitation — that visual shape is half the text type, and a flat block of prose signals the wrong one.

The five parts: Every brochure follows the same shape. Hit all five parts and you've covered the conventions the examiner is looking for — and you'll never forget the title/slogan or the call to action, both easy Criterion C marks.

Brochure — 5 parts

1

Title / slogan

A catchy headline that names what you're promoting. « Découvrez le Jardin Vert de ton lycée ! »

2

Inviting intro

A short hook that speaks straight to the reader. « Tu t'ennuies après les cours ? Rejoins-nous ! »

3

Sections with headings

Grouped highlights under headings, with bullet points. « Qu'est-ce qu'on te propose ? ✓ Ateliers ✓ Sorties »

4

Practical details

The concrete facts: dates, place, price. « Quand et où : du lundi au vendredi, dans la cour arrière. Gratuit ! »

5

Call to action

Tell the reader exactly what to do next. « N'attends plus, inscris-toi dès aujourd'hui ! »

Don't skip the frame: Students lose easy Criterion C marks by forgetting the title/slogan or the call to action. They take seconds and show you know the text type — never leave them out. And remember: no « Cher… » and no « Cordialement » — a brochure has no greeting or sign-off.
A model brochure, part by part: Here is a complete original brochure built from the five parts above. Read it once for the message — tap 🔊 to hear it, or Voir la traduction if you get stuck. Then we'll point out the features that earn the marks.

What makes this a brochure — the features that score

Feature by feature

  1. Title / slogan. « Découvrez le Jardin Vert de ton lycée ! » — a catchy headline with an imperative that names what's promoted, BEFORE anything else. That title is the first Criterion C mark.
  2. Inviting intro. « Tu t'ennuies après les cours ? Rejoins-nous… » — a direct question hooks the reader and speaks straight to them. The inviting hook is the signature opening of a brochure.
  3. Sections with headings + bullets. « Qu'est-ce qu'on te propose ? ✓ Ateliers… ✓ Sorties… ✓ Un coin détente… » — grouped highlights under a heading, with bullet points, so the text is scanned, not read.
  4. Practical details. « Quand et où : du lundi au vendredi, de 17 h à 19 h, dans la cour arrière. La participation est gratuite ! » — concrete facts (when, where, price) the reader needs.
  5. Call to action. « N'attends plus, inscris-toi dès aujourd'hui ! Passe à la salle des professeurs… » — the brochure urges the reader to act and says HOW — the final Criterion C mark, often forgotten. Note: no greeting, no sign-off.
Copy the frame, change the content: Reuse this frame — title/slogan → inviting intro → sections with headings → practical details → call to action — for any brochure task. Only the topic and the offer change; the conventions stay the same, and that is what scores Criterion C.

A toolkit you can reuse: Learn a few ready-made phrases for each part as a deck. With them you can write any brochure: a catchy title, an inviting hook, sections under headings, and a clear call to action — all in a persuasive, practical register. Tap 🔊 to hear them.

For the title & the hook

  • Découvrez… ! / Profitez de… ! — Discover…! / Make the most of…!
  • Tu t'ennuies ? Envie de nouveauté ? — Bored? Fancy something new?
  • Rejoins-nous et… — Join us and…

  • Qu'est-ce qu'on te propose ? — What do we offer you?
  • ✓ … ✓ … — bullet points for each highlight
  • En plus, on dispose de… — What's more, we have…

For the details & the call to action

  • Quand et où : … — When and where: …
  • La participation est gratuite. / Tarif : seulement… — Taking part is free. / Price: only…
  • N'attends plus, inscris-toi dès aujourd'hui ! — Don't wait any longer, sign up today!

Plug in, don't translate: These are chunks you plug straight into your brochure — never translate word-for-word from English, which produces unnatural French. One catchy hook, one bullet-point list under a heading, and one closing call to action is plenty — and instantly makes the text feel like the real text type. Reusing accurate set phrases is exactly what Criterion A (Language) and Criterion C (conventions) reward.
