The gist: Watch a full grade-7 IO come together: a sharp global issue and line of inquiry → close analysis of two extracts → widening to the whole works → a conclusion — everything you've prepared for the oral, assembled.
A finished top-band IO shows you the target — copy the shape and the moves, not the words.
🔍 We'll take a global issue, a literary extract and a non-literary extract, and build the ten-minute oral the exam way: name the issue and line of inquiry, analyse each extract closely, weave the works, widen to the whole works, and conclude. This is 4.1–4.8 in one model.
The grade-7 IO shape
Sharp issue + line of inquiry
A specific global issue and an argument about both works.
Close, woven analysis
Analyse each extract's choices, crossing between the works.
Widen to whole works
Show the extracts represent how each whole work treats the issue.
Conclude with a payoff
End on what the two works together reveal about the issue.
The key move: A grade-7 IO = sharp issue + line of inquiry → close woven analysis of two extracts → widen to whole works → conclusion with a payoff. Copy this onto your own works.

Why it matters in the exam: This is the shape examiners reward across all four IO criteria (A knowledge, B analysis, C organisation, D language). A worked model shows how the parts fit into one top-band oral.
GLOBAL ISSUE: how war is sold to the young. LITERARY EXTRACT (poem): “They promised us a story we could die inside — / clean, and quick, and ours. / What they gave us was mud that remembered everything, / and a silence where the story should have been.” NON-LITERARY EXTRACT (recruitment poster text): “BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER. Adventure. Brotherhood. A career with purpose. Your country is calling — will you answer?”

Watch out: A grade-7 exemplar is a MODEL of the shape — don't memorise its wording. Your IO uses your own works; copy the MOVES (issue, line of inquiry, woven analysis, widening, payoff), not the sentences.
