What 'language for the oral' covers: In the Individual Oral (your IA) you describe a stimulus, interpret it and give your opinion — out loud, in Italian, without notes in front of you. This micro is your toolkit: ready-made phrases to describe, interpret, give an opinion, link ideas and buy thinking-time in Italian. Learn them as a deck, then use them in the tasks below.

Nell'immagine si vede un gruppo di ragazzi.DESCRIBE — In the image you can see a group of teenagers.
Sembra che stiano festeggiando qualcosa.INTERPRET — It seems that they are celebrating something.
Secondo me la diversità è importante.OPINE — In my opinion, diversity is important.
Da un lato… dall'altro lato…LINK — On the one hand… on the other hand…
Allora, fammi pensare un attimo…FILLER — Well, let me think for a moment…
Why this matters: The examiner can only mark what you say. Reusing accurate phrases for each function (describe → interpret → opine) and linking them with connectors is exactly how you score Criterion A (Language) and Criterion B (Message) in the oral.

Lift your language a level: Short, flat sentences («È bello. È importante.») score low on Criterion A. To sound advanced, reach for high-level structures: the congiuntivo («penso che sia…», «sembra che siano…»), the condizionale («direi che…», «sarebbe meglio se…»), and impersonal modals («si dovrebbe…», «si potrebbe…»). Plan one of each into every answer.

Opinion phrases (introduce a view)

  • Secondo me… / Dal mio punto di vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Direi che… — I would say that… (condizionale, sounds mature)
  • Sarebbe meglio se… — It would be better if… (condizionale + congiuntivo)
  • Si dovrebbe… / Si potrebbe… — One should… / One could… (impersonal modals)
  • Da un lato… dall'altro lato… — On the one hand… on the other hand…

Low-level language (avoid)

  • «È bello. È importante. Ci sono persone.» (frasi corte e slegate)
  • Ripetere sempre la stessa formula d'opinione.
  • Passare all'inglese quando manca una parola.

High-level language (aim for)

Link your ideas: Connectors turn a list into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), quindi / perciò (therefore), anche se (although), eppure (and yet). Use two or three per answer to build a real argument.

Recognise the three functions: Before you can produce these phrases, you need to recognise them. Below is a described stimulus and a student's planning note for an oral. Read it once for the gist; tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck. Then we'll work through one exam-style task.

IB-style task — identify the function

Una domanda, passo dopo passo

  2. Look for the signal phrase. «Sembra che…» signals a deduction about something uncertain — not a fact you can see, and not a personal value-judgement.

Oral structure — 5 steps

1

Describe

Say what you can see. «Nell'immagine si vede… In primo piano / Sullo sfondo…»

2

Interpret

Deduce what is happening. «Sembra che… Ho l'impressione che…»

3

Opine (high-level)

Give a view with the condizionale / a modal. «Direi che… Si dovrebbe… Sarebbe meglio se…»

4

Link your ideas

Join with connectors. «inoltre», «tuttavia», «perciò», «perché», «anche se».

5

Fill in Italian

Buy thinking-time with an Italian filler, never English. «Allora… beh… fammi pensare…»

Describe → Interpret → Opine → Link → Fill (in Italian)

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

Un intervento parlato, passo dopo passo

Perché prende punti — why it scores: This spoken answer hits all three oral criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • High-level structures: condizionale «direi / sarebbe»
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • All three functions: describes AND interprets AND opines
  • Ideas developed with reasons («perché…», «per + infinito»)

C — Interactive & receptive /6

  • Fluent — fills pauses with an ITALIAN filler, not silence
  • Stays in Italian, never switches to English
  • Can ask for clarification if needed

Hear how a strong student strings the oral phrases together. Listen for the three functions (describe → interpret → opine) and the Italian fillers. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

(Which function does Lucia start with?)
(Which high-level structure does she use for her opinion?)
(What does she say if she doesn't understand a question?)

Well… in the image you can see a group of volunteers handing out food in a park. In the foreground a girl is helping an older lady. It seems they are organising a solidarity initiative, and I get the impression that everyone is very motivated. Well… in my opinion solidarity is important because it strengthens the community; I would say it would be better if more young people took part. If I don't understand a question, I simply say: «Could you please repeat that?»

  3. «Potrebbe ripetere, per favore?»
