What the Individual Oral asks of you: In the Individual Oral (IA) you describe a photo (the stimolo) and then link it to one of the five course themes and to the Italian-speaking world (Italy — and Italian-speaking Switzerland). Describing the photo alone is not enough: the marks come from connecting the image to its tema and its cultura, and from adding inference (una supposizione) and opinion (la tua opinione).
The four moves of a strong IO opening
- Descrivere — say what you see (a quick, accurate description).
- Nominare il tema — name the course theme: «Questa immagine appartiene al tema …».
- Collegare alla cultura — give ONE concrete Italian-speaking cultural reference.
- Dedurre e valutare — infer («Immagino che …») and give an opinion («Secondo me …»).

Why this matters: Naming the theme and adding a concrete cultural reference is rewarded under Criterion B (Message) — it shows you can use the language to develop ideas, not just describe a picture.
Which of the five themes?: Every stimolo belongs to one of the five themes. Ask «Di che cosa si tratta davvero?» (what is it really about?) and name the best fit with a clear phrase: «Questa immagine appartiene al tema …».

Inference signposts: You can't know who the people are, so infer: Immagino che … / Suppongo che … (I suppose that…, + subjunctive), Probabilmente … (probably…), Sembra che … (it seems that…). Inference shows the examiner you can speculate in Italian — a higher-level skill than plain description.

One concrete reference beats three vague ones: After naming the theme, give ONE specific, accurate cultural reference from the Italian-speaking world. «In Italia c'è il Carnevale di Venezia» scores; «gli italiani a volte fanno delle feste» does not. Specificity = real cultural knowledge.

IB-style task — from photo to a concrete reference
Three moves, step by step
- Name the theme. «Questa immagine appartiene al tema «Identità», perché parla di cibo e di tradizione.»
- Give ONE concrete reference. «In Italia la pizza napoletana è famosa in tutto il mondo, e il caffè espresso fa parte della vita quotidiana.»
- Stay accurate. Pick a reference you are SURE about — a wrong «fact» (for example naming a Spanish festival) weakens your answer more than a simple, correct one.
Keep a small bank ready: Before the exam, memorise two concrete Italian references per theme (a festival, a food, a person, a custom). Then whatever photo appears, you already have a real cultural fact to reach for.
Go beyond what you can see: Top answers don't stop at the facts. After the theme and the cultural reference, infer what is happening and say what you think. This turns a description into a real spoken message — and the examiner can then ask you about it.
Opinion & evaluation phrases

In this photo I see a crowded square during Carnival: there are many people with masks and colourful costumes, some are dancing and others are taking photographs under the evening lights. In the Italian-speaking world carnivals are very famous, for example the Carnival of Venice with its masks or the one in Viareggio with its floats. I imagine that these people are friends or family enjoying the evening together. In my opinion, festivals like these keep the culture alive and create a sense of community. Where I live there are festivals too, but they are smaller and less traditional.
