What an opinion column is: An opinion column (la rubrica d'opinione or l'editoriale) is a short, personal newspaper or blog text in which the writer defends one clear point of view on a current issue. It belongs to the theme Media texts (Topic 2.3). You need the words below to state a stance, argue it persuasively and close strongly.
la rubrica d'opinione / l'editoriale
the opinion column / opinion piece
la posizione / il punto di vista
the stance / point of view
il titolo
the headline / title
l'argomento — argomentare
the argument — to argue
la domanda retorica
the rhetorical question
convincere — convincente
to convince — persuasive
il lettore / la lettrice
the reader
il tema d'attualità
the current / topical issue
l'introduzione — la conclusione
the introduction — the conclusion
il punto di vista opposto / la controargomentazione
the opposing view / counter-argument
il tono persuasivo
the persuasive tone
essere fermamente convinto/a che…
to be firmly convinced that…
prendere posizione / schierarsi
to take a stance / to take sides
Useful expression (Italian)English
Secondo me…In my opinion…
È evidente che…It is obvious that…
Sono fermamente convinto che…I am firmly convinced that…
Ci serve davvero…?Do we really need…?
Per tutte queste ragioni…For all these reasons…
Why this matters: An opinion column lives or dies by its stance. A column with no clear opinion reads like a news report and loses Criterion C (conceptual understanding of the text type). Use these opinion verbs from your very first line.

Have something to say: Examiners reward a clear stance backed by developed arguments, not just opinion words. Decide what you think, give a reason and an example, and acknowledge the other side before you knock it down. Common column topics: screen-time limits, pedestrian zones, school rules, the environment.

Stance & persuasion phrases

  • Secondo me… / Dal mio punto di vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • È evidente che… — It is obvious that…
  • Sono fermamente convinto che… — I am firmly convinced that…
— Those who defend X are right about one thing, but…
  • Ci serve davvero…? — Do we really need…? (rhetorical question)

Rubrica d'opinione (opinion column)

  • Prima persona e tono persuasivo.
  • Una posizione chiara che viene difesa.
  • Domande retoriche e giudizi di valore.

Notizia di cronaca (news report)

  • Terza persona e tono neutro.
  • Solo fatti, nessuna posizione personale.
  • Dati e citazioni senza giudizio.
Link your ideas: Connectors turn opinions into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), perciò / quindi (therefore), anche se (although). A column should also concede the other side once — «… ha ragione su un punto, tuttavia …» — and then win the point.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short opinion column — the kind of media text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once for the general idea, then again to spot the stance and the persuasive devices. Tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck.

  1. The question — «Con quale mezzo retorico si apre la rubrica?»
  2. Find it in the text. Look at the very first line: «Ci serve davvero un altro centro commerciale?» — that is a question put to the reader.
Reading technique: In a column, find the opinion verbs («secondo me», «sono convinto») to pin down the stance, and look at the first and last lines for the headline-hook and the call to action — that is where the conventions live.

Opinion column structure — 5 steps

1

Catchy headline

Often a question. «Cibo spazzatura a scuola?»

2

State your stance

Make your opinion clear from the start. «Secondo me…»

3

Argument + example

Develop one point with a reason or example. «È evidente che…, perché…»

4

Concede & rebut

Admit the other side, then beat it. «Chi difende X ha ragione, ma…» + rhetorical question.

5

Strong close

Restate your stance memorably. «Per tutte queste ragioni, sono convinto che…»

Headline → Stance → Argument → Concede & rebut → Strong close

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

La rubrica scritta, passo dopo passo

  1. Cibo spazzatura a scuola? Per me la questione è chiara.
Perché prende punti — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Opinion verbs: «secondo me», «sono convinto»
  • Connectors: «tuttavia», «per tutte queste ragioni»
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: a clear stance, argued
  • Ideas developed with a concrete example
  • The opposing view is conceded and rebutted

C — Conceptual /6

  • Column conventions: a hook headline
  • First person + persuasive tone throughout
  • Rhetorical question + a memorable close

Comprensione orale — Laura alla radio della scuola

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Here a student reads her opinion column aloud on the school radio. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

  1. Quale posizione sostiene Laura sui cellulari in classe? (What stance does Laura take on phones in class?)
  2. Quale controargomentazione ammette prima di respingerla? (Which counter-argument does she concede before rebutting it?)

Ciao, sono Laura. Ci servono davvero i cellulari in classe?

Hi, this is Laura. Do we really need phones in class? In my opinion, the answer is no. It is obvious that the phone distracts us: instead of listening, we look at the screen. Those who defend phones are right about one thing: sometimes they help with research. However, these advantages do not make up for the distraction. For all these reasons, I am firmly convinced: in class, phones should stay switched off.

  1. È contraria: in classe i cellulari dovrebbero restare spenti.
  2. Che a volte i cellulari aiutano a fare ricerche.

Dovremmo chiudere il centro storico alle auto? Secondo me la risposta è sì.

[1 mark]
