Mein erstes Erntedankfest (Fortsetzung)

  1. The question — „Was hat der Person dem Text zufolge beim Fest am besten gefallen?“
  2. Find it in the text.
Reading technique: For a „dem Text zufolge“ (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Present a festival or custom from your region.
Inhalt 2Erkläre, wie man die Tradition lebendig hält.Explain how the tradition is kept alive.
LängeSchreibe zwischen 450 und 600 Wörtern.Write 450–600 words.

Article structure — 4 steps

1

Headline + standfirst

A headline, then one sentence that says what the article is about. „Ein Baum, ein Dorf, ein Fest“

2

Introduction: the facts

Give the key facts: what, where, when. „Am 1. Mai stellen die Menschen in Oberau…“

3

Development: details + a quotation

Add history, details and a quotation. „Der Bürgermeister erklärt: „Ohne die Jungen…““

4

Conclusion

Sum up and widen the point. „Bräuche bleiben also nur lebendig, wenn…“

Headline + standfirst → Introduction → Development → Conclusion

Modell: die 4 Schritte in ~100 Wörtern

Der fertige Artikel, Schritt für Schritt

  1. Ein Baum, ein Dorf, ein Fest – Warum der Maibaum in Oberau jedes Jahr Hunderte Menschen zusammenbringt.
Warum es funktioniert — what makes it strong: A strong article does these things for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Präteritum vs Präsens: „machten mit“ / „helfen“
  • Konjunktiv II: „würde sterben“
  • Festival vocabulary: „der Brauch“, „schmücken“

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: presents the custom AND explains how it stays alive
  • Developed with a date, a figure and a quotation

C — Conceptual /6

  • Article conventions: a headline and a standfirst
  • Facts first (what, where, when), then a quotation
  • A neutral tone and a conclusion that sums up

Höre wie in Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Hörverstehen — Marlenes Lieblingsfest

Listen to Marlene describe her favourite festival. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

  1. Was mag Marlene am liebsten an dem Fest? (What does Marlene like most about the festival?)

Hi, my name is Marlene and I come from a small town in southern Germany. My favourite festival is Fasching (carnival), a very old custom in my region. For a whole week, people go out into the street in costumes, there are parades and music everywhere. What I like most is that the whole family gets together: my mother cooks a typical dish and we dance together until late at night. For me, the most important thing is that this custom is passed on from generation to generation.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
