Language for the oral: This micro is your toolkit of phrases for the Individual Oral (l'oral individuel). In the SL oral you are given a photo (a visual stimulus) linked to one of the five themes, and you must describe it, interpret it, link it to the theme and to the target culture, and then have a conversation — all in French. The exam doesn't just test grammar: it tests whether you can keep talking fluently. So you need ready-made phrases to describe (« sur la photo, on voit… »), interpret (« on dirait que… »), give an opinion (« à mon avis… »), and buy thinking time (« eh bien… ») — instead of freezing or answering in one word.

Why this scores marks: The examiner rewards a steady, developed flow of French, not perfect silence. A candidate who describes, then interprets, then links to the theme and opines — gluing it all with fillers and connectors — sounds far stronger than one who lists three facts and stops. Learn the phrases here so that, whatever photo appears, you always have something to say next.
Five jobs, ready-made phrases: Your fluency toolkit has five jobs: describe, interpret, opine, buy time, and connect. Keep one or two phrases for each ready to fire. The trick is to vary them (don't say « eh bien » before every sentence) and to put real content between the phrases — the phrases are the glue, your ideas are the marks.

Aim higher than « c'est bien »: To lift your Language mark, slip in high-level structures: the conditional « j'aimerais que… » (I would like…), and the subjunctive after « il faut que… » (we must…) or « je ne pense pas que… » (I don't think that…). « Il faut qu'on fasse plus » sounds far stronger than « on doit faire plus ».

A reliable running order: Whatever photo you get, follow the same five steps. It gives your talk a clear shape and means you never run dry. Open, describe, interpret, link, opine — then keep developing every idea with a reason.

Never a one-word answer: In the conversation that follows, never stop at one word. If the examiner asks « C'est important ? », don't say « Oui ». Say « Oui, je trouve que c'est très important, parce que… » and add a reason. A French filler (« eh bien… ») plus a « parce que » turns a dead end into a developed answer.

Steal this running order: Notice what earns marks here: the candidate doesn't just list what's in the photo — they interpret it (« on dirait que… »), link it to the theme (« cette image se rattache au thème des Identités »), give a reason (« parce que… »), and finish with two high-level structures (subjunctive « il faut qu'on célèbre », conditional « j'aimerais que »). The slips anglophone candidates make: Four traps cost most oral marks. (1) One-word answers — « Oui. » with nothing added (✗) instead of « Oui, parce que… » with a reason (✓). (2) English fillers and silence — « um… like… » or a long pause (✗) instead of a French filler « eh bien… / disons que… » (✓). (3) Only describing, never interpreting — listing what's there but never saying « on dirait que… ». (4) No high-level structures — staying at « c'est bien » instead of reaching for the conditional « j'aimerais que… » or the subjunctive « il faut qu'on… ».
