Linking to theme & culture: In the individual oral (l'oral individuel), every photo (le stimulus visuel) is tied to one of the five themes, and a strong presentation does two extra things after describing it: it names the theme the image belongs to, and it connects the image to the French-speaking world (le monde francophone). Naming the theme uses phrases like « Cette image illustre le thème de… »; reaching for the culture uses « Dans les pays francophones… » and « cela me fait penser à… » (a real festival, custom or place). Together, theme + culture is what lifts your Message marks above a plain description.

Why it matters: Describing a photo is only half the task. The examiner also wants to hear why the image matters — which theme it belongs to, and how it connects to francophone culture. A presentation that names the theme and gives one concrete cultural reference scores far higher on Message (Critère B) than one that just lists what is in the photo.
Three sets of phrases: Linking uses three sets of phrases: naming the theme (which of the five themes?), reaching for the culture (a concrete francophone reference) and generalising (a wider cultural point). Chain them, in the present tense: « Cette image illustre le thème de… », « Dans les pays francophones, cela me fait penser à… », « Cette image montre que, dans le monde francophone, … ».

Concrete beats vague: A specific, correct reference is worth far more than a vague one. Say « le 14 juillet, la fête nationale française » or « le Carnaval de Québec », not « il y a des fêtes quelque part ». Keep two or three real francophone facts ready — une fête (le 14 juillet, le Carnaval de Québec, la Fête du Mouton au Maroc), un lieu (la Provence, Dakar, Montréal) or une coutume (le marché de plein air, l'apéritif) — and you can link almost any photo.

The name → example → broaden routine: Once you have described the photo, link it in three steps: name the theme (and say why), give one concrete francophone cultural example, then broaden to a wider point about the French-speaking world. This order — name → example → broaden — wins Message marks and gives the examiner something to ask about.

The slips that cost Message marks: Four traps lose most marks here. (1) No theme named — describing the photo but never saying which of the five themes it belongs to. (2) The vague reference — « il y a des fêtes quelque part dans le monde francophone » instead of a concrete one (« le Carnaval de Québec »). (3) A wrong or made-up cultural claim — inventing a francophone festival that doesn't exist. (4) Staying on literal description and never generalising to a wider cultural point.
