Three criteria, marked /30: Your Individual Oral (l'oral individuel) is marked out of 30 across three criteria. Critère A — Langue /12 is about your French (range and accuracy of vocabulary and structures, clear pronunciation). Critère B — Message /12 is about how you use the visual stimulus and link it to the theme — you must describe AND interpret the photo and develop relevant ideas. Critère C — Compréhension et interaction /6 is your interactive and receptive skill — understanding the teacher and keeping the conversation going. Knowing what each criterion rewards tells you exactly where the marks are.
Critère A — Langue /12
Language — range and accuracy of your vocabulary and structures, and clear pronunciation
Critère B — Message /12
Message — how well you use the visual stimulus: describe AND interpret the photo and link developed ideas to the theme
Critère C — Compréhension et interaction /6
Receptive & interactive skills — understanding the teacher and developing the conversation naturally
le stimulus visuel
the photo linked to one of the five themes — using it well is the heart of Critère B
sur 30
the three criteria add up to a total of /30 (12 + 12 + 6)
25 %
the oral is worth 25% of your final French B SL grade
Aim at all three at once: A top answer hits all three criteria together: a developed idea that uses the stimulus and the theme (B), said in varied, accurate French (A), in response to the teacher and inviting a reply (C). Don't pour everything into one criterion — spread your strengths.
What each criterion rewards: Here are the three criteria on one card: the mark out of, what it rewards, and what a top answer does. Learn this and you'll always know what to show the examiner at each moment of the oral.
Lock in the weightings: Two criteria carry /12 (Langue and Message) and one carries /6 (Compréhension et interaction). So Message is worth as much as your French — never treat the photo as decoration. Use it, interpret it, and tie it to the theme to win that big /12.

What to do for each criterion: Walk through the three criteria in order and you'll know exactly which move earns which mark. Each step says what the criterion wants and how to show it in the oral.

Earning A, B and C — 4 moves

1

Critère A — show your French

Use varied vocabulary and a range of structures (different tenses, connectors, an opinion phrase), keep good grammatical control and speak with clear pronunciation. Variety + accuracy = the /12 for Langue.

2

Critère B — use the stimulus

Describe what's in the photo, then interpret what it means or suggests — never just a list. Going from « il y a… » to « je pense que cette image montre… » is what earns the first half of Message.

3

Critère B — link to the theme & develop

Name the theme and justify the link (« cela se rapporte au thème de… parce que… »), then develop your ideas with reasons and examples. Relevant, developed ideas tied to the theme earn the rest of the /12.

4

Critère C — understand & interact

In the conversation, listen to the teacher, answer the actual question, develop your reply (never one word), and keep the conversation going. Real two-way interaction earns the /6.

Langue → Décrire+interpréter → Relier+développer → Interagir

Describe → interpret → link → develop: Follow the order décrire → interpréter → relier au thème → développer for Message (B), in varied accurate French for Langue (A), and stay responsive in the conversation for Compréhension et interaction (C). One clear plan, all three criteria covered.
A model description, criterion by criterion: Imagine a photo of young people planting trees in a park (theme: partage de la planète). Here's a strong model built one move at a time. Read each step, then tap Voir la traduction — the English tells you which criterion that move earns (A Langue, B Message, or C Compréhension et interaction). Tap 🔊 to hear it.

What earns marks under A, B and C

Décrire → interpréter → relier → développer → interagir

Read the model as an examiner: Notice how each move targets a criterion: varied, accurate French throughout = A (Langue); describe + interpret + link + develop the photo and theme = B (Message); inviting a reply and answering naturally = C (Compréhension et interaction). A top answer doesn't pick one — it shows all three.

What loses marks under each criterion: Most marks slip away in predictable ways — one typical mistake per criterion. Compare the good move with the costly mistake and tap any line for the English. Fixing these three is the fastest way to raise your score.

One fix per criterion: Three quick checks: (A) Did I vary my vocabulary and tenses, not repeat? (B) Did I interpret the image and link it to the theme, not just describe? (C) Did I develop each reply and interact, not answer in one word or recite? Tick all three and you cover the whole /30.
