HL : la conversation suit l’extrait: The conversation skills here transfer directly — just note that at HL the conversation grows out of your extrait littéraire and its work (from one of your two studied works): first about the extract and the book, then a broader discussion of the themes. (At SL the conversation follows une photo, un stimulus visuel.) Développe, justifie, apporte des preuves tirées du texte. The conversation (la conversation): The Individual Oral has two halves. At HL, first you describe an extrait littéraire (a passage from one of your two studied works) for about 3-4 minutes — the SL version describes a visual stimulus, une photo linked to a course theme. Then comes the conversation (la conversation): the teacher asks you questions about the photo and the wider theme, and you talk together for about 4-5 minutes. This micro is about that conversation half. The secret is simple: never give one-word answers — for each question, give a clear answer, a reason (« parce que… ») and an example (« par exemple… »), and keep the exchange going.

What the examiner is listening for: The conversation is where you show you can interact in French, not just recite. The examiner wants developed, justified answers, a bit of your own experience (« dans mon cas… »), and the confidence to ask for help if you don't understand (« Pourriez-vous répéter ? ») instead of freezing. Short, undeveloped replies are the single biggest score-killer here.
Three things the examiner marks: Your oral is scored on three criteria. You can't change them, but you CAN aim your answers at them. Criterion B (Message) rewards developed, justified, relevant ideas — so always add a reason and an example. Criterion C (Interactive skills) rewards understanding the questions and keeping the exchange going — so react, personalise, and ask for clarification when you need to. Criterion A (Language) rewards varied, accurate French — so use connectors and a range of structures.

Turn every answer into a mini-paragraph: The winning shape for almost any question is: opinion → reason → example → your experience. « À mon avis, oui, parce que… Par exemple… et dans mon cas… » Say that out loud and you've just hit Criteria B and C in one breath.

Four moves for any question: When the teacher asks something, don't rush to a one-word answer. Run through four quick moves. They take seconds and turn a bare reply into a developed one. If you didn't catch the question, move 0 comes first: ask for it again — that's allowed and it never costs you marks.

If you blank, talk around it: Don't have an opinion ready? Say so in French and develop that: « Honnêtement, je n'y avais jamais pensé, mais je dirais que… » (Honestly, I'd never thought about it, but I'd say that…). The examiner rewards how you keep talking, not whether your view is the «right» one.

The slips that cost the most: Four habits sink scores in the conversation. (1) One-word answers (« Oui. ») — there's almost nothing to mark, so Criterion C collapses. (2) Giving up with « Je ne sais pas » or going silent instead of trying. (3) Switching to English when stuck, instead of asking for a repeat in French. (4) Opinions with no justification (« C'est bien. » with no « parce que »). Compare the weak version with the fix.
