Three rings: After presenting the extract, widen it: first the theme, then the whole work, then the French-speaking world.
| Ring | What you do | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Theme | Name a precise theme and prove it with a quotation. | Cet extrait illustre le thème de… (This extract illustrates the theme of…) |
| 2. Whole work | Give one echo or turning point elsewhere in the book. | On retrouve cette idée plus loin, quand… (We find this idea again later, when…) |
| 3. The world | Give one real link to the French-speaking world. | Dans le monde francophone, … (In the French-speaking world, …) |
Concrete beats vague: « Le thème, c'est la vie » is too vague. Name one real place or situation, then come back to the text.

Short stories set in Lyon: This extract was written for this lesson: Awa, from Senegal, on her first day at school in France.
« A… Ava ? Ava Diop ? »
