Start with the extract: Before you comment, show where the extract sits and what happens. Keep this part under a minute.

Four steps

1

Name

The work and its genre: « Cet extrait est tiré de la pièce… » (This extract comes from the play…).

2

Place

Where it comes in the work and what happened just before: « Il se situe au milieu de la pièce. »

3

Tell

What happens, in two sentences, in the present tense: « Maude annonce qu'elle part. »

4

Describe

The characters and the setting, each with a short quotation.

Name → Place → Tell → Describe

Two rules

  • Tell the story in the present, even if the book is in the past.
  • The « je » in a text is le narrateur, not the author.

A play set in Québec: This extract was written for this lesson. Read it, then see how to present it.

— On pourrait, dit Papi.

». [1 mark]
