The gist: A writer uses a symbol or a motif to point at a meaning bigger than the object itself.

You already read symbols every day.

💬 A red heart means love, a black armband means mourning, a school logo means belonging. A small object stands for a much bigger idea. Writers use objects the same way.

Here are the two ideas, each with an example:

One clear example of each

1

Symbol

An object that stands for a bigger idea: a wilting flower can stand for lost innocence. The flower is real, but it points at something larger.

2

Motif

An image that keeps coming back across a text: if that flower reappears in every chapter, the repetition turns it into a motif that ties the story together.

3

How they differ

A symbol is what an object means; a motif is a symbol (or image) that recurs — repetition is what makes it a motif.

The key move: Name the symbol or motif, say the bigger idea it points to, and (for a motif) note how the repetition builds meaning across the text.

Why it matters in the exam: Symbol and motif score when you explain the meaning, not just spot the object. Say what the object stands for and, for a motif, what its return adds — don't just write ‘the writer uses symbolism’.
IB-style questionAnalyse[6 marks]

Analyse the symbolism: “The cracked mirror in the hallway had been there for years. She passed it every morning, and every morning it showed her the same broken face.”

Watch out: Don't just say ‘the mirror is a symbol’. Say what bigger idea it stands for, and for a repeated image, what its return adds.
