HDI ranges from 0 to 1. Countries are classified as: Very High (≥ 0.800), High (0.700–0.799), Medium (0.550–0.699), Low (< 0.550).
HDI in action: Norway (HDI ≈ 0.961) vs Niger (HDI ≈ 0.394). The gap reflects differences in life expectancy (83 vs 62 years), schooling (12.6 vs 2.1 mean years), and income ($65k vs $1.2k GNI PPP).

📐 Beyond the HDI
- Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) — shows that many high-HDI countries drop significantly when inequality is factored in.
- Gender Inequality Index (GII) — highlights discrimination that the HDI alone cannot capture.
- Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) — goes beyond income poverty to capture what people actually experience.
