🚀 Pink''s Drive Theory
Big Idea: Daniel Pink argues that for complex, creative work, intrinsic motivation matters more than external rewards. Three key drivers: Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose.
- Autonomy — the desire to direct our own lives. Give employees freedom over what they do, when, how and with whom
- Mastery — the urge to get better at something that matters. Provide opportunities to learn, develop skills and face challenges
- Purpose — the yearning to do what we do in service of something larger than ourselves. Connect work to a meaningful mission
Google''s famous 20% time allowed engineers to spend one day a week on personal projects (autonomy + mastery). This led to innovations like Gmail and Google Maps.
When does Pink''s theory apply?
- Works best for complex, creative, problem-solving tasks
- Less relevant for routine, mechanical work where pay-for-performance may work better
- Assumes basic pay needs are already met (similar to Maslow''s higher needs)
- Increasingly relevant in knowledge-based and creative industries
