BM SL Paper Structure

Know exactly what to expect in each paper and how to maximize your marks.

Paper 1

Pre-released Statement + Unseen Case Study
1 hour 30 minutes•30 marks•35% of final grade

You receive a short pre-released statement (a few paragraphs) that gives the context and background of an organization. On exam day, you get the full unseen case study with detailed data, financials, and scenarios to analyse.

What to expect:

Pre-released statement: a few paragraphs giving context and background
The full case study is unseen — you only see it on exam day
Structured questions up to 10 marks

Key Tips

  • Use the pre-released statement to identify likely themes, tools, and theories
  • Prepare a "toolkit" of applicable frameworks (SWOT, PEST, stakeholder mapping)
  • On exam day, read the unseen case study carefully — link data to your arguments

Easy Marks

  • Define terms: always worth 1-2 marks with no case study link needed
  • Quote specific data from the unseen case study in your answers
  • Use business tools: SWOT analysis, stakeholder mapping, force field analysis

Watch Out

  • The unseen case study may contain surprises — don't assume everything from the pre-released statement
  • Generic answers without case study reference = low marks

Paper 2

Structured Questions
1 hour 30 minutes•40 marks•35% of final grade
Section AStructured question based on stimulus material20 marks
Section BOne question from a choice of two20 marks

What to expect:

Questions based on unseen stimulus material (fictional organizations)
Each question builds from low-order to high-order thinking
Typically starts with "Define" (2 marks) → "Explain" (4 marks) → "Evaluate/Discuss" (10 marks)

Key Tips

  • Spend 1 minute per mark as a guide (2 mark = 2 min, 10 mark = 10 min)
  • For 10-mark essays: intro (define + context), 2-3 arguments for, 2-3 against, conclusion
  • Always refer back to the specific business in the stimulus

Easy Marks

  • "Define" and "Outline" questions are free marks — learn all key terms
  • Use business frameworks: STEEPLE, Ansoff Matrix, Boston Matrix, Porter's Five Forces
  • Show calculations clearly with working to earn method marks

Watch Out

  • Don't write 10-mark answers for 2-mark questions — match length to marks
  • "Evaluate" needs BOTH sides + a justified conclusion referencing the business

BM-Specific Skills

These concepts appear throughout BM exams. Master them to score higher.

Business Tools & Frameworks

Use SWOT, PEST/STEEPLE, Ansoff Matrix, Boston Matrix, Porter's, and Force Field Analysis. Examiners reward proper application of tools.

Stakeholder Thinking

Consider how decisions affect different stakeholders: employees, customers, shareholders, community. Show conflicting interests.

Real Business Context

Always apply concepts to the specific business in the case study or stimulus. Generic textbook answers score low.

Quantitative Skills

Practice financial calculations: break-even, ratios, investment appraisal. Always show working AND interpret results.

Common BM Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from others' mistakes. These cost students marks every exam session.

Writing generic textbook answers not linked to the business

Reference the organization by name and use specific data from the stimulus

One-sided arguments in evaluate/discuss questions

Show advantages AND disadvantages, then give justified conclusion

Calculating without interpreting

After every calculation, write what it means: "This means the business will break even after selling 500 units"

Ignoring stakeholder perspectives

Mention how the decision affects different groups: employees, shareholders, customers, community

Not managing time on Paper 1

Know the case study so well that you spend exam time answering, not re-reading

Forgetting to give a recommendation when asked

End with a clear recommendation backed by evidence: "I would recommend X because..."

Business Research Project

30% of final grade • 2,000 words maximum

A written commentary based on a real business issue or problem. You research an organization, collect primary/secondary data, apply business tools, and make recommendations.

Marking Criteria

Tips for Top Marks

  • Choose a real, accessible organization where you can get primary data
  • Frame a specific, focused research question (not too broad)
  • Use at least 2-3 business tools (SWOT, financial ratios, decision trees, etc.)
  • Collect primary data: interviews, surveys, observations
  • Make practical, justified recommendations the business could actually implement
