Key concepts in Identities

Key Idea: Identities is about who you are: how you live, your health, what you believe, the groups you belong to and the languages you speak. You use these words in reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Phrases for every lesson

  • Give your view: {{En mi opinión… / Creo que…|In my opinion… / I think…}}
  • Weigh two sides: {{Por un lado… por otro lado…|On the one hand… on the other hand…}}
  • Link your ideas: {{sin embargo, por lo tanto|however, therefore}}
  • When you write: choose the text type and tone, then plan a hook, your ideas and an ending.

Lifestyles

  • Words: {{estilo de vida, rutina, bienestar|lifestyle, routine, well-being}}, {{madrugar, desconectar, cuidarse|to get up early, to switch off, to look after yourself}}, {{el equilibrio, el estrés|balance, stress}}
  • Debate: busy city life or a simpler, slower life?

Health & well-being

  • Words: {{la salud, la dieta|health, diet}}, {{hacer ejercicio, dormir bien|to exercise, to sleep well}}, {{la salud mental|mental health}}
  • Debate: good habits or bad habits, for body and mind.

Beliefs & values

  • Words: {{la creencia, el valor, la fe|belief, value, faith}}, {{el respeto, la tolerancia, la igualdad|respect, tolerance, equality}}, {{convivir, juzgar, compartir valores|to live together, to judge, to share values}}
  • Debate: tradition or change? How do we respect difference?
  • Compare beliefs without judging them. A useful link: {{aunque|although}}

Subcultures

  • Words: {{la subcultura, la tribu urbana, la identidad|subculture, urban tribe, identity}}, {{pertenecer a, expresarse, encajar|to belong to, to express oneself, to fit in}}, {{la comunidad en línea|online community}}
  • Debate: belonging and self-expression, or the pressure to fit in?
  • Always present subcultures in a positive light, as identity and respect.

Language & identity

  • Words: {{la lengua materna, el idioma, el hablante|mother tongue, language, speaker}}, {{ser bilingüe, aprender idiomas, preservar una lengua|to be bilingual, to learn languages, to preserve a language}}, {{la lengua indígena|indigenous language}}
  • Debate: why learn languages? Why do mother tongues and minority languages matter?
Each theme needs the same three things: its own words, an opinion with a reason, and linking words between your ideas.

What does «madrugar» mean? To get up early.

How do you say "mental health"? «la salud mental».

How do you write about beliefs that are not yours? You compare them, but you never judge them.

What does «encajar» mean? To fit in.

What is «la lengua materna»? Your mother tongue.

What does «sin embargo» mean? However.
