Technology — same core at HL: Plug in calmly: the tecnología vocabulary on the internet, devices and their benefits and risks matches the SL course exactly, so you are in the right place.

Same as SL

  • The internet
  • Devices
  • Their benefits and risks

What HL adds later

  • You weigh these pros and cons across a longer 450–600-word essay
  • You tackle slightly denser reading
  • Get the tech arguments balanced and precise here, and the HL tasks become a natural broadening rather than something new
What 'la tecnología' covers: Technology (la tecnología) is part of the theme Human ingenuity. You need vocabulary to talk about devices, the internet, social media, apps, artificial intelligence and how technology shapes work and daily life — and to give your opinion about them. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.
la tecnología
technology
el dispositivo / el aparato

to decide for yourself
Useful expression (Spanish)English
Paso demasiado tiempo frente a la pantalla.I spend too much time in front of the screen.
No puedo vivir sin el móvil.I can't live without my phone.
Uso una aplicación para organizar mis estudios.I use an app to organise my studies.
La inteligencia artificial está por todas partes.Artificial intelligence is everywhere.
Hay que usar la tecnología con cabeza. You have to use technology sensibly.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text about social media, a listening interview about a phone ban, a Paper 1 blog about apps, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

  • La inteligencia artificial también crea trabajos nuevos.

Rules on devices

Tech in daily life

  • las casas inteligentes del futuro
  • aplicaciones para aprender idiomas o hacer ejercicio
  • pagar con el móvil en el mercado

Tech that helps

  • un museo de inteligencia artificial
  • los mayores y las nuevas tecnologías
  • un robot de compañía, manos impresas en 3D

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Human ingenuity)

Step diagram: How to argue about a technology rule
Paper 1 tasks on phone bans, device rules, AI and smart homes follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: además (besides), sin embargo (however), por lo tanto (therefore), aunque (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog, the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.

  • Tap Ver traducción if you get stuck.
  • Then we'll do one exam question together.

  2. Find it in the text.
  3. The answer — Que su corazón latía de forma irregular.
Reading technique: For a según el texto (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Defiende tu postura.

Escribe entre 450 y 600 palabras.

Opinion column structure — 5 steps

1

Title

A short, striking title that hints at your view. Apagar para encender la mente

2

Your position

State your view clearly, early on. Lo digo claramente: …

3

Arguments

Two arguments with facts or examples. Para empezar…, Además…

4

Refutation

Admit the other side, then answer it. Es cierto que… Sin embargo…

5

Conclusion

A firm ending, often a proposal. Por lo tanto, propongo…

Title → Position → Arguments → Refutation → Conclusion

Modelo: los 5 pasos en ~100 palabras

La columna, paso a paso

  1. Apagar para encender la mente
Por qué funciona — why it works: A strong opinion column does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Comparison: más dependientes que libres
  • Nosotros command: apaguemos

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: a clear position, defended with arguments
  • The opposing view is answered, not ignored

C — Conceptual /6

  • Opinion-column conventions: a striking title and an early position
  • Refutation: Es cierto que… Sin embargo…
  • A personal, persuasive voice and a firm conclusion
Escucha como en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to Lucía talk about the voice assistant her family bought. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(Why did Lucía get worried about the voice assistant?)

Hi, I'm Lucía. A few months ago my parents bought a voice assistant for the house. At first I loved it: it plays music, reminds us of appointments and even switches the lights on. However, one day I read that these devices can record our conversations and I got worried. Now we switch it off when we talk about personal things and we've checked the privacy settings. For me, technology is very useful, but we have to be the ones in control of it.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.

[2 marks]
