Beliefs & values, HL framing: Worth saying plainly: expressing creencias y valores and comparing perspectives respectfully is taught identically at SL and HL, so this is genuinely your topic.

Same as SL

  • Expressing creencias y valores
  • Comparing perspectives respectfully
  • The same nuanced opinion language

What HL adds later

  • That opinion language powers a longer 450–600-word essay
  • It feeds the deeper comparison your literary oral expects
  • Get comfortable arguing values now: that subtlety is exactly what HL examiners reward
What 'creencias y valores' covers: Beliefs and values (las creencias y los valores) is part of the theme Identities. You need vocabulary to describe what people believe, the principles that guide them, and how different views can live side by side — and to give a balanced opinion without judging. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in reading and writing.
la creencia
belief
el valor (los valores)
value (values)
la fe
faith
la religión / ser religioso/a
religion / to be religious
la tradición
tradition
el respeto / respetar
respect / to respect
la tolerancia
tolerance
la honestidad
honesty
la igualdad
equality
la libertad
freedom
convivir
to live together (in harmony)
juzgar / sin juzgar
to judge / without judging
compartir valores
to share values
Useful expression (Spanish)English
For me, the most important thing is respect.
Respeto las creencias de los demás.I respect other people's beliefs.
Cada persona tiene sus propios valores. Each person has their own values.
Podemos convivir aunque pensemos diferente. We can live together even if we think differently.
Lo importante es escuchar sin juzgar. What matters is to listen without judging.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text on traditions, a listening interview about values, a Paper 1 letter, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Take a balanced position — the syllabus rewards comparing perspectives without judging.

Common debates about beliefs and values

  • Tradition vs change
  • Religious vs secular life
  • Whether shared values matter more than agreeing on everything

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • En mi opinión… / Desde mi punto de vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Me parece que… / Creo que… — It seems to me that… / I think that…
  • Lo más importante es… — The most important thing is…
  • Por un lado… por otro lado… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Respeto que… aunque… — I respect that… even though…

Riesgos de no respetar (drawbacks)

  • Juzgar a los demás genera conflictos.
  • La intolerancia divide a las personas.
  • Si nadie escucha, no hay diálogo.

Ventajas del respeto (benefits)

  • La tolerancia nos permite convivir en paz.
  • Aprendemos de creencias diferentes a las nuestras.
  • Compartir valores nos une, aunque pensemos distinto.

Values we live by

  • la familia, la amistad, la honestidad
  • ¿el dinero antes que la felicidad?
  • ser tolerante con quien piensa distinto

Faith and festivals

  • la Semana Santa: fe, tradición y turismo
  • celebrar la Navidad sin ser religioso
  • las Fallas: quemar lo viejo

Acting on values

  • el voluntariado y el «postureo solidario»
  • cambiar un hábito por el planeta
  • decir la verdad aunque cueste

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Identities)

Step diagram: How to discuss a value
Blogs, speeches and diary entries on values build their message this way.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: además (besides), sin embargo (however), por lo tanto (therefore), aunque (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

ir a misa
to go to mass
faltar a
to miss / to be absent from
estar de acuerdo
to agree
juzgarse
to judge one another
pensar igual
to think the same way

IB-style task — una pregunta de Paper 2

Una pregunta, paso a paso

  2. Find it in the text.
  3. The answer — Va a misa (y no falta a las comidas familiares).
Reading technique: For a según el texto (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.

Speech structure — 5 steps

1

Greet the audience

Greet the people in the room and thank them. Buenos días, compañeros y profesores.

2

Announce the topic

Say clearly what you will talk about. Hoy quiero hablaros de…

3

Your arguments

Two or three points, signposted for listeners. Primero…, Además…

4

Call to action

Tell the audience what to do, with the imperative. Os pido tres cosas: escuchad…

5

Closing line

A memorable last sentence and thanks. Muchas gracias por vuestra atención.

Greet → Topic → Arguments → Call to action → Thanks

Modelo: los 5 pasos en ~100 palabras

El discurso, paso a paso

  1. Buenos días, compañeros y profesores. Gracias por estar aquí.
Por qué funciona — why it works: A strong speech does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Imperfect for past beliefs: pensaba, teníamos
  • Vosotros imperatives: escuchad, defended
  • Connectors: primero, además, por eso
  • Contrast: no es…, sino…

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: explains values AND encourages respect
  • A personal example backs up the message

C — Conceptual /6

  • Speech conventions: greets the audience and thanks them at the end
  • Announces the topic: Hoy quiero hablaros de…
  • Signposts for listeners and a direct appeal: os pido
Escucha como en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Comprensión auditiva — los valores de Sofía

Listen to Sofía talk about her beliefs. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(What does Sofía's family have in common?)

Hola, me llamo Sofía.

Hi, I'm Sofía. In my family we're very different: my mum is religious and goes to church, but my dad doesn't believe in anything. I'm still searching for my own beliefs. What we have in common are our values: honesty, respect and tolerance. At home we talk about everything without judging each other. For me, the most important thing is to respect other people's ideas even if they're different from mine.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
