Thrasymachus: 'justice is the will of the stronger': In Plato's Republic, Thrasymachus makes a shocking claim: there's no real standard of justice at all. Whoever holds power just makes the rules that suit them, then calls those rules 'just'. So 'justice' is only a pretty word for the will of the stronger — the strong dressing up their own advantage as fairness.
His evidence: look around. Rulers write laws that help rulers; the powerful call whatever protects them 'justice'.

Plato thought Thrasymachus had it backwards, and here's why.
Plato: justice is a real harmony: Plato answered that we couldn't complain a tyrant is unjust unless justice were a real standard above any ruler's wishes. For Plato, justice is a kind of harmony — each part doing its proper job, in a soul and in a society, so the whole works well. It isn't invented by the powerful; it's discovered, like the truth that a healthy body has its parts working together.
Go further — higher-level insight: Spot the self-refuting move in Thrasymachus. To say 'the strong are only PRETENDING to be just' already uses a real idea of justice — otherwise there'd be nothing to pretend at. The very complaint that power fakes justice assumes justice is more than power. Naming that is a top-band move.
