Two past tenses, two jobs: Italian tells a story about the past with two tenses working together. The passato prossimo («ho mangiato», «è arrivato») is for a single completed action — one thing that happened and finished. The imperfetto («mangiavo», «era», «faceva») is for the background: what things were like, what used to happen, or an action that was going on. The skill in this topic is not forming them (you know that from 3.2.1 and 3.2.2) — it is choosing the right one.
il passato prossimo
the compound past — a single, completed action («ho parlato», «sono uscito»)
l'imperfetto
the imperfect — background, description, habit or ongoing action («parlavo», «ero»)
un'azione conclusa
a completed action — it started and finished (→ passato prossimo)
lo sfondo / la descrizione
the background / description — what things were like (→ imperfetto)
un'azione abituale
a habitual action — something that used to happen (→ imperfetto)
un'azione in corso
an ongoing action — something that was in progress (→ imperfetto)
Why it carries the marks: Any past-tense narrative — a reading text, a listening account, your own written story — mixes these two tenses. Choosing correctly is exactly what Criterion A (Language) rewards: an examiner spots «ho leggevo» or a habit told in the passato prossimo immediately. Master the choice and every past-tense answer improves.
A quick reminder of each form: You already build these in 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. Passato prossimo = present of avere or essere + the past participle («ho parlato», «sono andato/a»). Imperfetto = one set of endings on the stem: -avo, -avi, -ava, -avamo, -avate, -avano (-are), with -ere/-ire taking -evo/-ivo. Here you compare them side by side so the choice becomes automatic.
VerbPassato prossimo (completed)Imperfetto (background/habit)
parlare (io)ho parlatoparlavo
mangiare (lui/lei)ha mangiatomangiava
andare (io) — esseresono andato/aandavo
essere (lui/lei)è stato/aera
fare (noi)abbiamo fattofacevamo
avere (loro)hanno avutoavevano
Three verbs to keep handy: Three very common verbs are almost always imperfetto when they set a scene: era (it was), c'era / c'erano (there was / there were) and aveva (he/she had). «Era tardi, c'erano poche persone e io avevo fame» is pure background — three imperfetti describing the situation before anything happens.

Ask: event, or scene?: One question decides the tense. Is this one thing that happened and finished (an event)? → passato prossimo. Or is it what things were like / a habit / something going on (the scene)? → imperfetto. In a story the imperfetto paints the backdrop and the passato prossimo drives the plot: «Mentre camminavo, ho incontrato Luca» — I was walking (scene) when I met Luca (event).

Passato prossimo (completed event)

  • Ieri ho comprato un libro nuovo.
  • Il treno è arrivato in ritardo.
  • Siamo usciti alle otto.

Imperfetto (scene / habit / ongoing)

  • Da bambino leggevo molti fumetti.
  • Faceva freddo e il cielo era grigio.
  • Mentre studiavo, ascoltavo la musica.
Signal words that tip you off: Certain time expressions lean towards one tense. Imperfetto signals: sempre, di solito, ogni giorno, spesso, mentre, da bambino/a (habit or duration). Passato prossimo signals: ieri, l'anno scorso, un giorno, all'improvviso, poi, alle otto (a point in time). They are hints, not rules — always check whether the action is completed or ongoing.
A little story, both tenses woven in: Here is a short narrative built one sentence at a time. Watch the pattern: the imperfetto («era», «pioveva», «leggevo») paints the scene, then the passato prossimo («ho sentito», «mi sono alzato», «ho aperto») brings the events. Read it once for meaning, then tap Mostra traduzione for the English or 🔊 to hear it.

IB-style task — i due tempi in azione

Una storia, frase per frase

  1. Era una domenica tranquilla e fuori pioveva.
  2. Io leggevo sul divano mentre mia sorella ascoltava la musica.
  3. All'improvviso ho sentito un rumore e mi sono alzato di scatto.
  4. Ho aperto la porta e è entrato il nostro gatto, tutto bagnato.
  5. Alla fine abbiamo passato il pomeriggio a giocare con lui: è stata una bella domenica.
Steal this for your own story: This is a ready-made recipe for a past narrative: open with the scene in the imperfetto (weather, time, mood, what people were doing), then tell the events in the passato prossimo, and often close with «è stata una… » for the completed whole. Swap in your own scene and events and you have the backbone of a Paper 1 story.

The slips to watch for: Three mistakes dominate. 1. Telling a habit with the passato prossimo («ho giocato sempre» instead of giocavo sempre). 2. Telling a single event with the imperfetto («ieri mangiavo una pizza» instead of ieri ho mangiato una pizza). 3. Getting the interruption the wrong way round («mentre ho studiato, suonava il telefono» instead of mentre studiavo, ha suonato il telefono). Compare each right version with the typical mistake.

Corretto

  • Da piccola giocavo sempre in giardino.
  • Ieri ho mangiato una pizza enorme.
  • Mentre studiavo, ha suonato il telefono.

Errore frequente

  • Da piccola ho giocato sempre in giardino.
  • Ieri mangiavo una pizza enorme.
  • Mentre ho studiato, suonava il telefono.
Ask: is it a habit, a scene, or one finished event?: Before you choose, run two quick checks. 1. Is there a habit / description / ongoing action (sempre, di solito, mentre, «what it was like»)? → imperfetto. 2. Is it one thing that happened and finished at a point in time (ieri, all'improvviso, poi)? → passato prossimo. When one interrupts the other, the background is imperfetto and the interruption is passato prossimo.
