What an 'essay' is: An essay (il saggio argomentativo) is a professional text type, like the report and the proposal. It is a formal, impersonal text with a logical argument, for a reader who expects reasoned discussion.
What an essay does
- Presents a debatable topic
- Weighs the arguments for and against
- Ends with a reasoned opinion

Why this matters: The examiner can tell an essay from any other text by its register (formal, impersonal) and its structure (introduction → both sides → reasoned conclusion). Reusing these connectors accurately is exactly what scores Criterion A (Language) and Criterion C (Conceptual understanding).

Argomenti a favore (arguments for)
Argomenti contro (arguments against)
Stay objective: An essay uses an impersonal, objective tone: prefer «si» and «i sostenitori / i critici» over «io penso…» in the body. Save the first-person opinion («In conclusione, ritengo…») for the conclusion. Link ideas with tuttavia (nevertheless), però (however) and di conseguenza (consequently).

How to use it
- Read it once for the overall structure (introduction → both sides → conclusion); don't worry about every word.
- Tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck.
- Then we'll do one exam question together.
- the distraction
- concentrarsi
- to concentrate
- lo strumento
- the tool
- responsabile
- responsible
- l'uso consapevole di…
- the conscious use of…
IB-style task — una domanda di Paper 2
Una domanda, passo dopo passo
- The question — «Secondo il testo, quale opinione esprime l'autore nella conclusione?»
- Find it in the text. Look for «In conclusione»: «In conclusione, ritengo che il divieto dovrebbe valere solo durante le lezioni, accompagnato da un'educazione all'uso consapevole della tecnologia.»
- The answer — Il divieto dovrebbe valere solo durante le lezioni, insieme a un'educazione all'uso consapevole della tecnologia.
Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer. In an essay, the writer's own opinion is almost always in the conclusion («In conclusione…» / «Per concludere…»), not the body.

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.
(What do the critics object?)
- Quale soluzione propone Matteo? (What solution does Matteo propose?)
Hi, my name is Matteo. Today there is a lot of debate about whether mass tourism is good for art cities such as Venice and Florence. On the one hand, supporters claim that it brings work and wealth to thousands of families. On the other hand, critics object that rents go up and residents are forced to leave the centre. However, we must consider that the problem isn't the tourists, but the fact that they all go to the same places at the same time. In conclusion, I believe that limiting entry at the busiest times is the most balanced solution.
