Key Idea: In your 15 minutes of prep, you turn one photo into a talk: describe it, say what it means, then link it to a theme and to the French-speaking world.
Describing the stimulus
- Overview — «Sur cette photo, on voit…» Say what the whole scene shows.
- Details — «Au premier plan…», «à l'arrière-plan…», «au centre…»
- Interpret — «On dirait que…», «Il semble que…»
- Link — «Cela me fait penser au thème de…»
Linking to theme & culture
- Theme — «Cette image illustre le thème de… parce que…»
- Example — «Dans les pays francophones…» plus one true fact, such as «le 14 juillet».
- Wider — «Cette image montre que, dans le monde francophone,…»
Keep two or three true facts about French-speaking places ready, and never invent one.
«Il y avait un marché» or «il y a un marché»? Il y a. Describe the photo in the present tense.
Is a list of what you see enough? No. Always go on to what it means.
How do you say «she is choosing» about a person in the photo? Elle est en train de choisir.
Which comes first: the theme or the details? The details. Overview, details, meaning, then the theme.
Name a real French-speaking example from the lesson. Le Carnaval de Québec, or les marchés de Provence.
