Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Social organization)

Step diagram: How to write about getting involved
Paper 1 volunteering tasks (food bank, tutoring, a trip abroad) follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), bien que (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

volunteering / a volunteer

to have a big impact
s'engager pour les autres
to get involved for others

IB-style task — Vrai ou Faux, et justifie

Une question, étape par étape

  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for his first reason: Au début, je voulais juste ajouter une ligne sur mon CV.
  3. The answer — Faux. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Faux' on its own.
Reading technique: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero — you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it. The same rule applies to selon le texte questions: find the line, don't rely on memory.

Speech (discours) structure — 5 steps

1

Salutation au public

Greet the audience directly and open with a question.

2

Présentation du thème

Introduce yourself and the topic.

3

Arguments (2–3)

Give two or three reasons, drawn from your experience. D'abord, j'ai rencontré des gens formidables ; ensuite, j'ai pris confiance en moi…

4

Appel à l'action

Call the audience to act, using the vous imperative.

5

Clôture forte

End on a rallying line and thank the audience. Ensemble, nous pouvons changer notre ville. Merci de votre écoute !

Salutation → Thème → Arguments → Appel → Clôture

Modèle : les 5 étapes en ~95 mots

Le discours rédigé, étape par étape

  5. Ensemble, nous pouvons changer notre ville. Merci de votre écoute !
Why it works: A strong speech does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: passé composé j'ai aidé, présent chaque geste compte, impératif choisissez
  • Connectors: d'abord… ensuite… enfin, alors
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: tells a volunteering experience AND encourages others to join
  • Ideas developed with a concrete example (the food bank)

C — Conceptual /6

  • Speech conventions: greeting the audience + a strong close with Merci de votre écoute
  • Direct address (vous) + a rhetorical question to involve the listeners
  • A clear appel à l'action: choisissez, inscrivez-vous
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Compréhension orale — le bénévolat de Camille

Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks). Read the questions first, then listen — you hear the clip twice but never see the words. Reveal the answers when you're ready.

Hello, my name is Camille. Two evenings a week, I volunteer with a charity that gives free lessons to children in difficulty. I help them with their homework and, above all, I give them back their confidence. It's not always easy, but when a child finally understands a lesson, I'm very proud. For me, getting involved is giving a little and receiving a lot.

  1. Deux soirs par semaine.
  3. Quand un enfant comprend enfin une leçon.
Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
