Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Around community, the common debates are: knowing your neighbours vs living anonymously, the value of local associations, and sharing space and resources. Take a position and back it up.

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • À mon avis… / De mon point de vue… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…

  • D'un côté… de l'autre côté… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
— I (completely) agree with…

Vivre isolé (drawbacks)

  • On ne connaît pas ses voisins.
  • Quand on a un problème, on reste seul.

Sharing

  • vivre en communauté, partager les tâches
  • une appli d'entraide entre voisins
  • une outilthèque, un Repair Café

Bringing people together

  • la fête des voisins
  • des rencontres entre voisins de toutes nationalités
  • des repas entre générations

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Social organization)

Step diagram: How to pitch a community project
Paper 1 tasks that pitch a neighbourhood project, and texts on shared spaces, follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), bien que (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

a shared-housing project
une cuisine / salle collective / commune
a communal kitchen / room
se réunir / répartir les tâches
to meet / to divide up the chores
le lien social
the social bond
s'entraider / aider un voisin
to help one another / to help a neighbour
partager sa liberté
to share one's freedom

IB-style task — Vrai ou Faux, et justifie

Une question, étape par étape

  1. The statement — Dans cet habitat partagé, chaque famille vit complètement séparée des autres. Vrai ou Faux ?
  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for what they share: Chacun a son appartement, mais nous partageons une cuisine collective, un jardin et une grande salle commune.
  3. The answer — Faux. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Faux' on its own.
Reading technique: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero — you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it. The same rule applies to selon le texte questions: find the line, don't rely on memory.

Proposition (proposal) structure — 4 steps

1

Titre + destinataire

A clear title that names the project, then who it is for.

2

Objectif

State the problem and what the project aims to do. Beaucoup d'habitants ne se connaissent pas. Nous proposons de…

3

Plan

List the concrete steps in order.

4

Justification

Explain why it is worth it, with the conditional, and close politely. Ce projet coûterait peu… Nous espérons que vous soutiendrez cette proposition.

Titre + destinataire → Objectif → Plan → Justification

Modèle : les 4 étapes en ~100 mots

La proposition rédigée, étape par étape

Why it works: A strong proposal does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of structures: conditionnel coûterait, profiterait, futur vous soutiendrez
  • Connectors: d'abord… ensuite… enfin
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: presents the project, HOW to run it AND why it helps
  • Ideas developed with concrete details (the plot, Saturdays, the June meal)

C — Conceptual /6

  • Proposal conventions: a clear title + the addressee (À l'attention de…)
  • Headed parts in order: Objectif → Plan → Justification
  • Formal register (vous) and the conditional to suggest politely
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Compréhension orale — l'association de Sofia

Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks). Read the questions first, then listen — you hear the clip twice but never see the words. Reveal the answers when you're ready.

Hello, my name is Sofia. In my neighbourhood, we created a small association. Once a month, we organise a meal where everyone brings a dish. We also clean the park together and we help elderly people do their shopping. Since then, I know almost all my neighbours. For me, a community is above all people who help one another.

  2. Ils les aident à faire leurs courses.
  3. Des gens qui s'entraident.
Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
