What 'modes de vie' covers: Lifestyles (modes de vie) is part of the theme Identities. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.

  • describe daily routines and habits
  • talk about the pace of life and well-being
  • give your opinion about them

la routine (quotidienne)

Useful expression (French)English
J'ai envie d'un mode de vie plus simple.I want a simpler way of life.
J'essaie de garder l'équilibre.I try to keep a balance.
On vit beaucoup dehors, au grand air.We live mostly outdoors, in the open air.
Je passe trop de temps devant l'écran.I spend too much time in front of the screen.
Nous faisons pousser nos propres légumes. We grow our own vegetables.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text on health, a listening interview about routines, a Paper 1 blog, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Identities)

Step diagram: How to talk about a lifestyle choice
Reading texts, listening interviews and Paper 1 tasks on lifestyles all follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), bien que (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

  1. The statement — La famille de l'auteure reste toute l'année au même endroit. Vrai ou Faux ?
  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for a time of year or a journey: L'été, nous naviguons pendant deux semaines jusqu'à un autre canal : notre maison voyage avec nous.
  3. The answer — Faux. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Faux' on its own.
Reading technique: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero — you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it. The same rule applies to selon le texte questions: find the line, don't rely on memory.

Blog structure — 5 steps

1

Catchy title

A title, often a question. Tu vis à cent à l'heure ?

2

Greeting + topic

Greet the reader and say what the post is about. Salut à tous ! Aujourd'hui, je veux vous parler de…

3

Your experience

Describe your old routine in the past (imperfect). Avant, je vivais très stressé(e)…

4

Two or three tips

Give advice using the imperative. Dormez bien, faites attention à votre alimentation, déconnectez des écrans.

5

Motivating close

Finish with an encouraging line. Commencez dès aujourd'hui ! Vous vous sentirez mieux.

Title → Greeting → Experience → Tips → Close

Modèle : les 5 étapes en ~130 mots

Le blog rédigé, étape par étape

  1. Vivre plus simplement, ça change quoi ? Bien plus que je ne le pensais.
Why it works: A strong blog does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: imparfait vivais, impératif dormez
  • Connectors: cependant, par conséquent
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: describes a lifestyle AND gives advice
  • Ideas developed with concrete examples

C — Conceptual /6

  • Blog conventions: a catchy title
  • Direct address: je vous donne, commencez
  • A persuasive, personal tone
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to Élodie describe her daily routine at a dance boarding school. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

  1. Combien de temps Élodie danse-t-elle chaque après-midi ? (How long does Élodie dance each afternoon?)

Hi, I'm Élodie and I'm in a dance sport-studies programme in Bordeaux. My pace of life is very unusual: I have lessons in the morning from eight until half past twelve, then I dance every afternoon for three hours. I get back to the boarding house around seven, do my homework and go to bed at ten, otherwise I'm too tired the next day. I only see my parents at the weekend. It's a demanding way of life, but I do what I love every day.

  1. Trois heures (tous les après-midi).
Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
