What 'innovation scientifique' covers: Scientific innovation (l'innovation scientifique) is part of the theme Human ingenuity (l'ingéniosité humaine).

You need vocabulary to talk about

  • research and inventions
  • space and technology
  • the people behind them
  • your opinion
What the real paper used: The real Paper-2 text on this micro-topic was an interview with a young woman aiming to become an astronaut. So learn the science and the careers in science words below.

La recherche scientifique sauve des vies.Scientific research saves lives.
Je ne me suis jamais fermé de portes.I have never shut any doors on myself.
A team's strength lies in its diversity.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading interview with a young scientist, a listening clip about a discovery, a Paper 1 report on a science visit, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Human ingenuity)

Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), bien que (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short entretien (interview-profile), the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you (exactly the text type the real 1.3.5 Paper 2 used). Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.

aerospace engineering
concevoir des satellites
to design satellites
mener / participer à des recherches
to carry out / take part in research
se fermer des portes
to shut doors on oneself (to limit one's chances)
poursuivre ses études / viser un master
to continue one's studies / to aim for a master's
la diversité (est une force)
diversity (is a strength)

IB-style task — Vocabulaire en contexte + relier

Une question, étape par étape

  2. Hunt for the synonym in the text. Concevoir = to design / imagine-and-build.
  3. The answer — concevoir. For relier, you'd then match La professeure de Léa… to its ending …l'a encouragée à poursuivre ses études, because the text says she l'a encouragée à poursuivre ses études et à viser un master. Copy what the text actually says — never guess from general knowledge.
Reading technique: For vocabulaire en contexte, the answer is a single word or short phrase copied from the text — write the exact word, not a definition. For relier, match by finding the line that proves the link, never by general knowledge.

Report structure — 4 steps

1

Titre (title)

A clear, factual heading — not a catchy question. Rapport — Visite du salon de l'innovation.

2

Objectif / introduction

State what the report is about and why. Ce rapport présente la visite du salon… Son objectif est d'informer les membres.

3

Constats (findings)

Report what happened factually, both positives and problems. La plupart des projets étaient clairs. Cependant, la salle était bruyante. Stay neutral.

4

Recommandations

Suggest concrete improvements.

Titre → Objectif → Constats → Recommandations

Modèle : un rapport en 4 parties, en ~105 mots

Le rapport rédigé, étape par étape

Why it works: A strong report does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: passé composé a montré, présent il est recommandé
  • Connectors: cependant, par conséquent
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: objective + findings AND recommendations
  • Findings developed with concrete details

C — Conceptual /6

  • Report conventions: a factual title + headings
  • Neutral, objective tone (no je trouve génial !)
  • Findings → recommendations, logically ordered
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Compréhension orale — Karim, jeune chercheur

Listen to Karim, a young researcher, talk about his invention. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(What does Karim's invention measure?)

Hi, I'm Karim and I'm a researcher in a university laboratory. Two years ago, I invented a small sensor that measures air quality in schools. At first my early attempts failed several times, but I didn't give up. Today, my sensor is used in about ten schools in the region. For me, the most important thing in research is to solve a real problem and to help people.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
