What 'la technologie' covers: Technology (la technologie) is part of the theme Human ingenuity (l'ingéniosité humaine). Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.

You need vocabulary to talk about

  • devices, screens and apps
  • social media
  • artificial intelligence and robots
  • how technology shapes work, family life and the planet

Useful expression (French)English
Je passe trop de temps devant l'écran.I spend too much time in front of the screen.
Je ne peux pas me passer de mon portable.I can't do without my phone.
I use an app to organise my homework.
L'intelligence artificielle est partout.Artificial intelligence is everywhere.
Il faut utiliser la technologie avec modération. You have to use technology in moderation.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text about a care-home robot, a listening clip about electric cars, a Paper 1 opinion column on a phone ban, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Human ingenuity)

Step diagram: How to weigh up a technology
Articles on AI, robots and apps, and the Paper 1 tasks that ask you to weigh them up, follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), certes… mais (admittedly… but). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short article, the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.

How to work through it

  • Tap the audio button to hear it.
  • Tap Voir la traduction if you get stuck.
  • Then we'll do one exam question together.

  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for what the text says about staff: La directrice nous a expliqué qu'Élio ne remplace pas le personnel : au contraire, il crée du lien.
  3. The answer — Faux. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Faux' on its own.
Reading technique: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero — you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it. The same rule applies to réponse courte questions: find the line in the text and quote it, don't rely on memory.

Opinion-column structure — 5 steps

1

Titre accrocheur

A short, punchy title that hints at your stance. Le portable à table ? Non merci.

2

Prise de position claire

State your opinion up front — no fence-sitting.

3

Arguments

Two or three reasons that back your stance, each developed. D'abord… De plus, des études montrent que…

4

Réfutation d'un contre-argument

Name the opposing view, then knock it down.

5

Conclusion percutante

End on a strong, persuasive line that calls the reader to act.

Why it works: A strong opinion column does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: présent pense, futur vous verrez
  • Connectors: certes… mais, par conséquent
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: a CLEAR stance, developed arguments
  • A genuine refutation of the opposing view

C — Conceptual /6

  • Opinion-column conventions: a punchy title + clear stance
  • Arguments + a refutation that engages the reader
  • A persuasive close that calls the reader to act
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions, but you never see the words.

This clip

  • Here's one, simplified: a talk about electric cars, like the real Paper 2 listening.
  • Play it and answer.
  • Then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to Nadia, an automotive engineer, talk to students about electric cars. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(Why do some countries offer financial help to buyers?)

Hello everyone, my name is Nadia and I'm an automotive engineer. Today I've come to talk to you about the electric car. Its great advantage is that it gives off no polluting gases: so it's much better for the environment. What's more, its engine is almost silent and very simple to maintain, so repairs cost less. At first these cars were expensive, but today prices are falling. That's why some countries offer financial help to buyers: they want to encourage everyone to choose electric.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
