What 'rites de passage' covers: Rites of passage (les rites de passage) is part of the theme Experiences. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.

The common debates around rites of passage

  • Whether milestones like the bac or turning 18 still matter
  • The pressure to 'grow up' on time
  • How different Francophone cultures mark the same milestones in their own way

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • À mon avis… / De mon point de vue… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Il me semble que… / Je pense que… — It seems to me that… / I think that…
  • Le plus important, c'est… — The most important thing is…
  • D'un côté… de l'autre côté… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
— I (completely) agree with…

Becoming an adult

School milestones

  • le brevet, le bac
  • l'entrée au lycée
  • le bal de promo

Firsts

  • le premier job d'été
  • le premier voyage seul
  • les rites d'autres cultures

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Experiences)

  • À quel moment devient-on vraiment adulte ?

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog, the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you.

How to read it

  • Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.
  • Tap the audio button to hear it, or Voir la traduction if you get stuck.
  • Then we'll do one exam question together, using the real Vrai / Faux + justifiez rule.

Aujourd'hui, je me sens enfin adulte.

IB-style task — Vrai ou Faux, et justifie

Une question, étape par étape

  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for the licence: Mes parents m'ont offert les clés de leur vieille voiture, parce que je venais d'avoir mon permis de conduire.
  3. The answer — Vrai. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Vrai' on its own. A tick with no quote, or with the wrong line, scores zero.
Reading technique: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero — you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it, and the quote must be the right one. For vocabulaire en contexte questions, copy the word exactly as it appears in the text: a synonym of your own is not accepted.
Write 250–400 words.

Personal-letter structure — 4 steps

1

Lieu + date

Top-right: where you are and the date. Dakar, le 12 juillet 2026

2

Formule d'appel

Greet your friend by name. Chère Amina, / Cher Karim, — then a friendly opener: Comment vas-tu ?

3

Corps : nouvelles / message

Tell the story in the past (passé composé/imparfait) and share your news. Figure-toi que j'ai eu mon bac…

4

Formule de clôture + signature

Ask for their news, then sign off warmly. Raconte-moi vite ton été ! Je t'embrasse, Fatou

Date → Appel → Corps → Clôture

Modèle : les 4 étapes en ~100 mots

La lettre rédigée, étape par étape

  1. Dakar, le 12 juillet 2026

  4. Et toi, raconte-moi vite ton été ! J'attends ta lettre avec impatience.

    Je t'embrasse, Fatou
Why it works: A strong personal letter does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: passé composé j'ai eu, imparfait j'étais
  • Connectors: puis, et
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: tells a rite of passage AND gives news
  • Ideas developed with concrete examples

C — Conceptual /6

  • Letter conventions: lieu + date, then a greeting Chère Amina,
  • A warm sign-off + signature: Je t'embrasse, Fatou
  • A close, personal tone to a named friend
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to Karim describe an important moment in his life. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(What did Karim gradually learn at his first job?)

Hi, I'm Karim. For me, the most important rite of passage was my first job, the summer I turned eighteen. At first it was hard: I had to get up early, manage my money and turn up on time on my own. However, little by little I learned to be more responsible and to make my own decisions. With my first pay, I treated my whole family to a restaurant meal. For me, becoming an adult is exactly that: learning to fend for yourself.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
