To what extent can aquatic food production systems truly be considered sustainable? [9]

How to answer it, step by step

  1. Argue both sides with examples

    • FOR: quotas at the maximum sustainable yield, marine protected areas, minimum mesh sizes and closed-system aquaculture all reduce impact

    • AGAINST: bycatch, trawling damage, fuel use, escapee fish diluting wild genes and feed waste causing eutrophication remain even at safe catch limits
  2. Reach a clear, supported conclusion

    • Weigh the two sides — don't just describe them

    • e.g. 'Legislation can fix much, but some impacts (bycatch, fuel use) are unavoidable, so full sustainability is rarely reached.'
