Key concepts in Experiences

Key Idea: Experiences is about how you spend your time and the moments that shape you: hobbies, travel, life stories, growing up, traditions and moving to a new country.

Phrases for every lesson

  • Give your view: In my opinion… / I think that…
  • Weigh two sides: On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Link your ideas: however, therefore, although
  • Writing: pick the right text type and tone. Plan a catchy start, your ideas and a strong ending.

Leisure & free time

  • Words: leisure, a hobby, a pastime, to sign up for, to meet up with friends, screen time
  • Debate: active hobbies or too much screen time? Alone or with others?

Travel & holidays

  • Words: trip, destination, to book, to pack, accommodation, mass tourism
  • Debate: package holidays or travelling independently? What does mass tourism do to a place?

Life stories

  • Words: memory, childhood, a turning point, to overcome a difficulty, to be proud of
  • Debate: do difficult experiences help us grow, or is home more comfortable?
  • A story has its own plan: hook, story, the lesson you learned, ending.

Rites of passage

  • Words: rite of passage, milestone, coming of age, graduation, ceremony, quinceañera
  • Debate: big ceremonies or simpler ones? What really makes someone an adult?

Customs & traditions

  • Words: custom, festival, parade, traditional costume, heritage, roots
  • Debate: keep traditions alive or follow modern life? Are festivals for the community or for tourists?

Migration

  • Words: to emigrate, to immigrate, to adapt, to integrate, culture shock, the language barrier
  • Debate: is moving abroad mostly hard, or mostly good for you?
For every experience, know the key words and say what you think, with a reason.

Which word means an important step in life, like graduation? A milestone.

What is the difference between to emigrate and to immigrate? You emigrate when you leave your country. You immigrate when you arrive in a new one.

What extra part does a life story have in its plan? What the story taught you, just before the ending.

Which word means a moment that changes your life? A turning point.

Give one difficulty of living in a new country. Culture shock, or the language barrier.
