The big idea: Anthropometrics is the measurement of human physical dimensions, reported as a percentile range — never as a single number.

One person's measurement tells a designer nothing. The spread across a population is the design input.

A train seat designer does not want "seat height 430 mm". They want the range of popliteal heights — the distance from the floor to the back of the knee — across everyone who will sit there, so they can pick a height that leaves the fewest feet dangling.

The split the exam asks for is how the body was positioned when the measurement was taken.

Static (structural)

  • Taken with the body still, in a fixed posture
  • Sitting eye height, shoulder height, popliteal height, buttock–knee length
  • Sets the fixed geometry: how high a seat, how deep a cushion
  • Easy to measure consistently

Dynamic (functional)

  • Taken while the body works
  • Forward grip reach, arm sweep, head-turn range
  • Sets where controls and displays can go
  • Harder to measure — it depends on the task
The tell in the question: Words like in use, while operating, reaching or turning signal dynamic data. If the question describes the body doing something, a static measurement will not answer it.

An anthropometric table always belongs to a particular population, and four factors shift it. The guide asks you to discuss them, so each needs a consequence, not just a name.

Age

Gender

Ethnicity

Disability

And the data ages: Populations have grown taller and heavier over decades. A table from the 1970s understates today's dimensions — which is why a designer checks the date of a dataset as well as its population.

How this is tested — using static and dynamic anthropometric data, and knowing which factors shift it. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Classify a named measurement as static or dynamic.
  • Identify which factor explains a stated misfit.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Explain which data a designer needs for a specific dimension of a product.
  • Explain how age, gender, ethnicity or disability affects a given design.
The trap: Students asked for a dynamic example give a static one — "arm length" is static, "forward grip reach while seated" is dynamic. The difference is whether the body was working.
