IB Design Technology Exam Guide

Design Technology Exam Skills & Techniques

Paper 1 is multiple choice and Paper 2 is always about a product. Choose your level for paper structures, the fifteen command terms, and the design-project criteria.

A Group 4 subject, first assessed in May 2027.

SL

Standard Level

The thirteen core topics: ergonomics, user-centred design, the design process, modelling and prototyping, materials, sustainability and product analysis.

  • • 150 teaching hours
  • • Paper 1: 1h, multiple choice (20%)
  • • Paper 2: 1h 30m (40%)
  • • Design project: 40%
HL

Higher Level

All SL content plus eleven further topics — structures, mechanisms, electronics, manufacturing techniques, production systems, life-cycle analysis and design for manufacture.

  • • 240 teaching hours
  • • Paper 1: 1h 30m, multiple choice (25%)
  • • Paper 2: 2h 30m (45%)
  • • Design project: 30%
