The big idea: A primary persona is one named user who stands for the attributes of a whole population — built from research data, never invented.

A scenario puts that person into a specific situation. Together they turn data a team argues about into a decision a team can make.

Research → persona → scenario → decision, on one real product. Step through to the end: a persona that never changes a decision was decoration.

Four tools, four jobs

1

Primary persona

One named user with goals, context and constraints. Sara, 34, ward nurse, 12-hour shifts, gloves on. Specific enough to picture, drawn from data.

2

Scenario

That persona doing the task in context: setting an infusion rate at 3am with one hand free. The time, the light and the free hand are all constraints a persona alone does not surface.

3

Population stereotype

An expectation a whole population shares — red means stop, clockwise means more. Design with it and the product is instantly usable; design against it and users err under pressure.

4

Demographics

The measurable make-up of the population — age, income, location, occupation. Demographics say who; personas say what they are like.

The test of a good persona: It changed a decision. If you can delete the persona and every design choice stays the same, it was never doing any work.

The guide asks you to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using these tools. Both halves are examinable — and personas have a specific failure mode worth knowing.

Advantages

  • The team shares one concrete user instead of arguing about an abstraction
  • Design decisions can be tested against a scenario before anything is built
  • Stereotypes make a product usable with no learning at all
  • Demographics show whether the persona is representative

Disadvantages

  • A persona built on thin data gives the designer's guesses authority
  • "Sara wouldn't" ends an argument that should have been settled with evidence
  • One primary persona can hide the diversity of the real population
  • Stereotypes are population-specific and can entrench bias
The failure mode: A persona is a shortcut to shared understanding, not a replacement for users. When the team stops going back to real people because they have Sara, the tool has become the problem.

How this is tested — using personas, scenarios and population stereotypes, and knowing their limits. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Identify what makes a persona usable rather than decorative.
  • Spot a design that works against a population stereotype.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Explain how a persona and scenario would guide a named product's development.
  • Evaluate the use of a single primary persona for a diverse market.
The trap: Writing a persona as a biography. Age, job and a photograph change nothing. The parts that earn marks are the goals, the context and the constraints — the things that force a decision.
IB-style questionExplain[4 marks]

A company is designing a smart thermostat. Explain how a primary persona and a scenario would guide its development.
