En una línea: El registro es el nivel de lengua que un autor elige según a quién le habla; por eso, antes de analizar qué dice un texto, conviene preguntarse cómo lo dice y a quién.

“Estimado cliente: le comunicamos que su solicitud ha sido tramitada.”

Compáralo ahora con un “¡Oye, ya está lo tuyo!”. Dicen exactamente lo mismo, pero no te suenan igual: uno guarda las distancias y el otro te trata como a un amigo. Esa diferencia se llama registro, y ningún autor la elige por casualidad. Fíjate en las dos pistas que la delatan:

El tratamiento

El usted marca distancia y respeto; el tú acerca y crea complicidad. Cuando un texto pasa del usted al tú —o al revés— casi siempre está cambiando la relación que busca con el lector.

El léxico

Un cultismo (‘tramitar’, ‘pertinente’) eleva el tono; un coloquialismo o la jerga (‘un rollo’, ‘currar’) lo baja y lo hace cercano. La distancia entre esas dos palabras para una misma idea es, justo, el registro.

El paso clave: Precisa qué marca ese registro —el tratamiento, el léxico, la sintaxis— y, sobre todo, interpreta para qué: ¿a quién le habla el autor?, ¿qué relación busca?, ¿qué consigue si de pronto cambia de registro?
