What a 'discorso' is: A speech (il discorso) is a spoken text type in the theme Text types (Paper 1 writing, Paper 2 reading). You stand in front of an audience to inform, persuade or motivate them. You need the conventions: address the audience, hook them, signpost your points and close memorably. Learn the words below, then use them in the reading and writing sections.

Why this matters: These words are the conventions of a speech. Reusing them — the address, the hook, the signposting, the closing thanks — is how you score Criterion C (Conceptual understanding) on a Paper 1 speech task.
Persuade, don't just inform: A speech is persuasive: you want the audience to do or believe something. Decide your message, then build it — a hook to grab attention, two or three signposted arguments, and a call to action. Address the audience directly ('voi / vi') and keep the tone energetic.
Phrases to address and persuade the audience

Discorso debole (a weak speech)
- Comincia senza un saluto e senza un aggancio.
- I punti non sono ordinati né segnalati.
- Non c'è nessun appello né una chiusura memorabile.
Discorso forte (a strong speech)
- Si rivolge direttamente al pubblico e pone una domanda retorica.
- Gli argomenti sono segnalati con «primo, secondo».
- Finisce con un appello e un ringraziamento al pubblico.

Una domanda, passo dopo passo
- The question — «Con quale mezzo comincia il discorso per rivolgersi al pubblico?»
- Find it in the text. Look at the very first line: «Buongiorno a tutti, cari compagni e care compagne!» — a greeting straight to the audience, followed by the rhetorical question «Quanti di voi …?»
- The answer — Con un saluto al pubblico e una domanda retorica.
Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Il compito — your task: Nella tua scuola si tiene un'assemblea sul tema della sostenibilità. Tieni un discorso davanti ai tuoi compagni e alle tue compagne in cui affronti il problema dello spreco di cibo e li inviti a fare qualcosa per risolverlo.

Hook
Open with something that grabs attention — often a rhetorical question. «Sprechiamo davvero così tanto?»
Greeting + topic

The problem
Make the problem concrete and personal. «Quanti di voi buttano qualcosa ogni giorno?»
Two or three proposals
Signpost each one. «Primo, prendiamo solo ciò che mangeremo; secondo, portiamo gli avanzi a casa.»
Call to action + thanks
End with an appeal and a memorable thank-you. «Cominciamo domani! Grazie mille per la vostra attenzione.»
