What 'l'uguaglianza' covers: Equality (l'uguaglianza) is part of the theme Sharing the Planet. You need vocabulary to talk about discrimination, diversity, rights and the fight for fair treatment — and to give your opinion about them. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.
l'uguaglianza / la parità
equality
la disuguaglianza
inequality
la discriminazione
discrimination
la diversità
diversity
l'inclusione
inclusion
il pregiudizio
prejudice
il diritto (i diritti)
the right (rights)
il rispetto
respect
il divario retributivo
the pay gap
escludere / emarginare
to exclude / to marginalise
lottare per / contro
to fight for / against
trattare tutti allo stesso modo
to treat everyone equally
avere gli stessi diritti
to have the same rights
Useful expression (Italian)English
Tutti dovrebbero avere gli stessi diritti.Everyone should have the same rights.
Bisogna lottare contro la discriminazione. We must fight against discrimination.
Bisogna rispettare la diversità.We must respect diversity.
Nessuno dovrebbe sentirsi escluso. No one should feel excluded.
A parità di lavoro, parità di stipendio.Equal pay for equal work.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text on inclusion, a listening interview about rights, a Paper 1 blog, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Around equality, the common debates are: discrimination and prejudice, the pay gap between men and women, inclusion at school and in society, and whether progress is fast enough. Take a position and back it up.

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • Secondo me… / Dal mio punto di vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Mi sembra che… / Penso che… — It seems to me that… / I think that…
  • La cosa più importante è… — The most important thing is…
  • Da un lato… dall'altro lato… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Sono (del tutto) d'accordo con… — I (completely) agree with…

Il problema (the problem)

  • Molte persone subiscono ancora la discriminazione.
  • Esiste un divario retributivo tra uomini e donne.
  • I pregiudizi escludono chi è diverso.

La soluzione (the solution)

  • Tutti devono avere gli stessi diritti.
  • L'educazione insegna il rispetto e l'inclusione.
  • I piccoli gesti di ogni giorno fanno la differenza.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), quindi / perciò (therefore), anche se (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short interview/blog — the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word. Tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck. Then we'll do one exam question together.

to dare / to have the courage (to)
uno spazio sicuro
a safe space
offensivo/a
offensive / hurtful
il progresso (i progressi)
progress
conquistare
to win / to gain (through effort)

IB-style task — una domanda di Paper 2

Una domanda, passo dopo passo

  1. The question — «Secondo il testo, perché Luca ha fondato il gruppo?»
  2. Find it in the text. Look for «ha fondato»: «Per questo ha fondato il gruppo: uno spazio sicuro dove ogni persona può essere se stessa senza paura.»
  3. The answer — Per creare uno spazio sicuro dove ogni persona può essere se stessa senza paura.
Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Il compito — your task: La tua scuola organizza una settimana per l'uguaglianza e la diversità. Scrivi un blog per gli altri studenti: racconta qualcosa che hai imparato sulla discriminazione e dai dei consigli per costruire una comunità più giusta.

Registro informale (tu/voi). Scrivi tra le 450 e le 600 parole.

Blog structure — 5 steps

1

Catchy title

A title, often a question. «Uguali davvero?»

2

Greeting + topic

Greet the reader and say what the post is about. «Ciao a tutti! Oggi voglio parlarvi di…»

3

Your experience

Recount what you learned (past tenses). «Alla mostra della scuola ho capito che…»

4

Two or three tips

Give advice using the imperative. «Rispettate tutti», «denunciate l'odio sui social», «sostenete chi si sente escluso».

5

Motivating close

Finish with an encouraging line. «Cominciate oggi! La nostra scuola sarà migliore per tutti.»

Title → Greeting → Experience → Tips → Close

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

Il blog scritto, passo dopo passo

  1. Uguali davvero? Non ancora — ma possiamo cambiare le cose.
  2. Ciao a tutti!
Perché prende punti — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: passato prossimo «ho capito», imperativo «rispettate»
  • Connectors: «perciò», «tuttavia»
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: recounts a lesson AND gives advice
  • Ideas developed with a concrete example

C — Conceptual /6

  • Blog conventions: a catchy title
  • Direct address: «vi do», «cominciate»
  • A persuasive, personal tone

Comprensione orale — il volontariato di Matteo

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear 3 short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

Ascolterai Matteo parlare della sua associazione e di come lotta per l'inclusione.

  1. Che cosa difende l'associazione di Matteo? (What does Matteo's association defend?)
  2. Che cosa sono riusciti a fare, poco a poco? (What did they manage to do, little by little?)

Ciao, sono Matteo e faccio il volontario in un'associazione che difende i diritti delle persone con disabilità. Prima, nella mia città, molti edifici pubblici non avevano le rampe e per questo alcune persone restavano escluse. Abbiamo parlato con il comune e, poco a poco, siamo riusciti a rendere accessibili le biblioteche e i musei. Per me l'inclusione non è un favore: è un diritto.
