What 'lingua e identità' covers: Language & identity (la lingua e l'identità) is part of the theme Identities. You need vocabulary to talk about your mother tongue, dialects and regional identity, being bilingual or multilingual, and how the language you speak shapes who you are. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.
la lingua madre / la madrelingua
mother tongue / native language
il dialetto

Useful expression (Italian)English
La mia lingua madre è l'italiano. My mother tongue is Italian.
A casa parliamo due lingue. At home we speak two languages.
Sono fiero delle mie radici.I am proud of my roots.
Il dialetto mi lega alla mia terra. The dialect ties me to my homeland.
Parlare più lingue apre la mente.Speaking several languages opens your mind.
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text about dialects, a listening interview with a bilingual student, a Paper 1 blog, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Around language & identity, the common debates are: whether dialects should be kept alive, whether being bilingual is an advantage, and whether losing a language means losing part of who you are. Take a position and back it up.

Opinion phrases (use these to introduce a view)

  • Secondo me… / Dal mio punto di vista… — In my opinion… / From my point of view…
  • Mi sembra che… / Penso che… — It seems to me that… / I think that…
  • La cosa più importante è… — The most important thing is…
  • Da un lato… dall'altro lato… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Sono (del tutto) d'accordo con… — I (completely) agree with…

Perché conservare la lingua madre e i dialetti (benefits)

  • La lingua ci lega alle nostre radici e alla famiglia.
  • Ogni dialetto custodisce una cultura e una storia.
  • Essere bilingue apre la mente e crea opportunità.

Le sfide (challenges)

  • Molti dialetti e lingue minoritarie rischiano di sparire.
  • A volte i giovani si vergognano di parlare dialetto.
  • Non è sempre facile tramandare una lingua alle nuove generazioni.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), quindi / perciò (therefore), anche se (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog — the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word. Tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck. Then we'll do one exam question together.
Tre lingue, una sola me: Sono cresciuta in un paese della Sicilia. In casa i miei nonni parlavano sempre in dialetto, mentre a scuola tutto era in italiano. Da bambina mi vergognavo un po' del dialetto: mi sembrava la lingua «del passato».

Poi mi sono trasferita a Milano per studiare e all'improvviso quel dialetto è diventato prezioso. Quando lo parlo con mia nonna al telefono, mi sento subito a casa. Ho capito che la mia lingua non è solo un modo di comunicare: è una parte della mia identità. Oggi parlo tre lingue — italiano, dialetto e inglese — e ognuna racconta una parte diversa di chi sono.
vergognarsi (di)
to be ashamed (of)
trasferirsi
to move (to another place)
all'improvviso
suddenly
prezioso/a
precious
sentirsi a casa
to feel at home

IB-style task — una domanda di Paper 2

Una domanda, passo dopo passo

  1. The question — «Secondo il testo, perché da bambina la persona si vergognava del dialetto?»
  2. Find it in the text. Look for «da bambina»: «Da bambina mi vergognavo un po' del dialetto: mi sembrava la lingua «del passato».»
  3. The answer — Perché le sembrava una lingua «del passato».
Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Il compito — your task: La tua scuola organizza una giornata sulle lingue del mondo. Scrivi un blog per gli altri studenti: racconta quali lingue parli (in famiglia, a scuola) e spiega perché le lingue sono importanti per l'identità.

Registro informale (tu/voi). Scrivi tra le 450 e le 600 parole.

Blog structure — 5 steps

1

Catchy title

A title, often a question. «Quante lingue parli davvero?»

2

Greeting + topic

Greet the reader and say what the post is about. «Ciao a tutti! Oggi voglio parlarvi di…»

3

Your experience

Describe the languages of your childhood in the past (imperfetto). «Da piccolo mescolavo le due lingue…»

4

Two or three tips

Give advice using the imperative. «Non vergognatevi della vostra lingua», «parlatela in famiglia», «imparate altre lingue».

5

Motivating close

Finish with an encouraging line. «Ogni lingua è un pezzo di voi!»

Title → Greeting → Experience → Tips → Close

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

Il blog scritto, passo dopo passo

  1. Quante lingue parli davvero?
  2. Ciao a tutti!
Perché prende punti — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: imperfetto «mescolavo», imperativo «parlatela»
  • Connectors: «tuttavia», «perciò»
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: says which languages AND why they matter
  • Ideas developed with concrete examples

C — Conceptual /6

  • Blog conventions: a catchy title
  • Direct address: «vi do», «non vergognatevi»
  • A persuasive, personal tone

Comprensione orale — le lingue di Amina

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear 3 short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

Ascolterai Amina parlare delle lingue che parla e di che cosa significano per lei.

  1. Con chi parla arabo Amina? (Who does she speak Arabic with?)
  2. Come si sente oggi Amina riguardo alle sue due lingue? (How does she feel today about her two languages?)

Ciao, mi chiamo Amina. Sono nata in Marocco, ma vivo in Italia da quando avevo sei anni. A casa parlo l'arabo con i miei genitori, mentre con i miei amici e a scuola parlo italiano. All'inizio mi vergognavo di parlare arabo in pubblico, ma adesso sono fiera delle mie due lingue: ognuna è una parte di me. Per me, parlare più lingue non è una confusione, è una ricchezza.

Hi, I'm Amina. I was born in Morocco, but I've lived in Italy since I was six. At home I speak Arabic with my parents, while with my friends and at school I speak Italian. At first I was ashamed to speak Arabic in public, but now I'm proud of my two languages: each one is a part of me. For me, speaking several languages isn't confusion, it's a richness.

  1. Con i suoi genitori, a casa.

[2 marks]
