Key concepts in Preparing for the IA

Key Idea: You have 15 minutes with your photo before the oral. This topic shows how to describe it in four steps, then link it to a theme, a real fact and your own view.

Describing the photo

  1. See — {{Auf dem Bild sehe ich …|In the picture I see …}}
  2. Where — {{im Vordergrund / im Hintergrund, links / rechts|in the foreground / background, on the left / right}}
  3. Mean — {{Es scheint, dass … / Ich glaube, das Bild zeigt …|It seems that … / I think the picture shows …}}
  4. Theme — {{Das hängt mit dem Thema … zusammen.|That is linked to the theme …}}

Linking to theme & culture

  • Name the theme and give a reason: {{…, weil …|…, because …}}
  • Add one concrete fact from Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
  • End with your opinion or a comparison with your country.
Describe the photo in the present tense, every time.

Where in the photo is «im Hintergrund»? At the back: the background.

What comes after you describe the photo? Say what it means, then name its theme.

Where does your real fact come from? A German-speaking country.

How can you end the link? With your view, or by comparing with your own country.
