What the Individual Oral asks of you: In the Individual Oral (IA) you describe a photo (the Stimulus) and then link it to one of the five course themes and to the German-speaking world (Germany, Austria, Switzerland — DE/AT/CH). Describing the photo alone is not enough: the marks come from connecting the image to its Thema and its Kultur, and from adding inference (Vermutung) and opinion (Meinung).
The four moves of a strong IO opening
- Beschreiben — say what you see (a quick, accurate description).
- Thema nennen — name the course theme: „Dieses Bild gehört zum Thema …“
- Kultur verbinden — give ONE concrete DE/AT/CH cultural reference.
- Schlussfolgern & bewerten — infer (Ich vermute, dass …) and give an opinion (Meiner Meinung nach …).

Why this matters: Naming the theme and adding a concrete cultural reference is rewarded under Criterion B (Message) — it shows you can use the language to develop ideas, not just describe a picture.
Which of the five themes?: Every Stimulus belongs to one of the five themes. Ask „Worum geht es eigentlich?“ (what is it really about?) and name the best fit with a clear phrase: „Dieses Bild gehört zum Thema …“.

Inference signposts: You can't know who the people are, so infer: Ich vermute, dass … (I suppose that…), Wahrscheinlich … (probably…), Es sieht so aus, als ob … (it looks as if…). Inference shows the examiner you can speculate in German — a higher-level skill than plain description.

One concrete reference beats three vague ones: After naming the theme, give ONE specific, accurate cultural reference from the German-speaking world. „In Deutschland gibt es das Oktoberfest in München“ scores; „die Deutschen feiern manchmal Feste“ does not. Specificity = real cultural knowledge.

IB-style task — from photo to a concrete reference
Three moves, step by step
- Name the theme. „Dieses Bild gehört zum Thema „Identitäten“, weil es um Essen und Tradition geht.“
- Give ONE concrete reference. „In der Schweiz ist die Schokolade weltberühmt, und in Österreich isst man gern Apfelstrudel.“
- Stay accurate. Pick a reference you are SURE about — a wrong „fact“ (e.g. naming a Spanish festival) weakens your answer more than a simple, correct one.
Keep a small bank ready: Before the exam, memorise two concrete DE/AT/CH references per theme (a festival, a food, a person, a custom). Then whatever photo appears, you already have a real cultural fact to reach for.
Go beyond what you can see: Top answers don't stop at the facts. After the theme and the cultural reference, infer what is happening and say what you think. This turns a description into a real spoken message — and the examiner can then ask you about it.

In the German-speaking countries, Christmas markets are very famous, for example the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg or the markets in Vienna. I imagine that the people are friends or family enjoying the evening together. In my opinion, festivals like these keep the culture alive and create a sense of community. Where I live there are winter markets too, but they are smaller and less traditional.
