Have something to say: Examiners reward developed ideas, not just vocabulary. Around scientific innovation, the common debates are: progress vs the risks of new technology, artificial intelligence replacing jobs, and the ethics of research. Take a position and back it up.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog — the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Then we'll do one exam question together.

How to read it

  • Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.
  • Tap the audio button to hear it.
  • Tap Übersetzung anzeigen if you get stuck.

  1. The question — „Was macht die Pillendose dem Text zufolge, wenn sie nicht geöffnet wird?“
  2. Find it in the text.
  3. The answer — Sie schickt eine Nachricht an die Familie.
Reading technique: For a „dem Text zufolge“ (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.

Der Auftrag — what to do

  • Beschreibe, was ihr gesehen und gelernt habt.
  • Gib Empfehlungen für zukünftige Besuche.
  • Schreibe zwischen 250 und 400 Wörtern.

Report structure — 4 steps

1

Factual title

A factual title with what and when. „Bericht: Besuch im Forschungslabor für erneuerbare Energien, 18. März“

2

Purpose

Say what the visit was for and who took part. „Ziel des Besuchs war es, … Teilgenommen haben 24 Schülerinnen und Schüler.“

3

Findings

What you found, with facts and figures, good and bad.

4

Recommendations

What should happen next time, then your name. „Wir empfehlen, …“

Title → Purpose → Findings → Recommendations

Modell: die 4 Schritte in ~90 Wörtern

Der fertige Bericht, Schritt für Schritt

  1. Bericht: Besuch im Forschungslabor für erneuerbare Energien, 18. März
– Elif Demir, Klasse 10c
Warum es funktioniert — what makes it strong: A strong report does these things for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Passive: „entwickelt werden“
  • Connectors: „danach“, „dagegen“

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: describes the visit AND recommends changes
  • Findings backed with figures (24 students, 30 per cent)

C — Conceptual /6

  • Report conventions: a factual title with the date
  • Purpose, then findings, then recommendations
  • Neutral tone: „wir“ for the class, no chatty greeting

Hörverstehen — die Erfinderin Nora

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

  1. Aus welchem Rohstoff stellte Nora ihr nachhaltiges Material her? (What raw material did Nora make her sustainable material from?)
(What matters most to her about innovation?)

Hi, I'm Nora and I'm a designer. A few years ago I invented a sustainable material made from pineapple leaves left over in the fields. Before, those leaves were thrown into the rubbish, but now they're turned into a kind of plant-based leather. I did a lot of research in the lab and at first I failed often. For me, the most important thing about innovation is solving a real problem and protecting the environment.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
