Both are part of the theme Text types (2.3): single-sheet texts addressed to a wide audience, with NO greeting and NO sign-off. But they do different jobs.
It has a strong slogan and a direct call to action around ONE cause. Aim: convince and make people act fast.
It has headings per panel and concrete info (times, address, prices). Aim: inform and guide.
Which one at Paper 1?: At l'épreuve 1 (Paper 1) you choose the tract for « mobilisez / faites campagne », and the dépliant for « informez / faites connaître » a place or service.
un tract
a (campaign) flyer / leaflet — short, punchy, persuasive
un dépliant
a folded leaflet — informational, with panels
un volet
a panel / fold of a leaflet
un slogan
a slogan (the punch of a tract)
un appel à l'action
a call to action (signez, venez, mobilisez-vous)
un intertitre
a sub-heading (one per panel of a dépliant)
des infos pratiques
practical info (horaires, adresse, tarifs)

Le TRACT — militer

  • un slogan fort en gros caractères
  • une seule cause, un message percutant
  • un appel à l'action direct (« Mobilisons-nous ! »)

— les distinguer: All three live in the same family of single-sheet promotional/informational texts, so don't confuse them.

Le tract

  • CAMPAIGNS and stirs
  • Slogan + call to action
  • One cause

Le dépliant

  • INFORMS and guides
  • Folded panels
  • Practical info

La brochure (2.3.6)

  • PROMOTES and develops
  • A longer promotional booklet
  • Sells an idea
Pick by purpose: Read what the task wants the text to do — campaign, inform, or sell — and pick accordingly. Matching the text type to its purpose is exactly what Criterion C (conceptual understanding) rewards.

Chaque feuille a son montage: Build each one with the steps below. The tract is short and punchy (slogan → problem → call to action); the dépliant is organised into panels with headings.

Le TRACT — 3 steps (militer)

1

Slogan / titre choc

Open with a strong slogan in big letters. « DES PISTES CYCLABLES, MAINTENANT ! »

2

The cause, punchy

State the problem in one or two short, striking sentences. « Notre ville manque de pistes sûres. »

3

Call to action

Tell the reader exactly what to do (and when/where). « Mobilisons-nous ! Signe la pétition, viens samedi à 10 h. »

1

Title + panels

A clear title, then organise content into panels (volets), each with a sub-heading. « ▸ HORAIRES · ▸ TARIFS · ▸ ACCÈS »

2

Practical info

Fill each panel with concrete facts. « Du mardi au dimanche, 10 h–18 h. Plein tarif : 8 €. »

3

A highlight / next step

End with a 'don't miss' panel or how to find out more.

Right shape, right purpose: Get the right shape for the right purpose and you bank easy Criterion C marks.
Pas d'en-tête, pas de signature: Neither a tract nor a dépliant is a letter: there is no greeting and no sign-off. The tract lives on its slogan + call to action; the dépliant lives on its headings + practical info. Keeping each to its own shape protects Criterion C.

Des phrases prêtes + deux mini-modèles: Learn these phrases as a deck, then read the two short original models: a tract (campaign for bike lanes) and a dépliant (a museum visit). Tap the audio button to hear them, or Voir la traduction if you get stuck.

Pour un TRACT (militer)

  • Mobilisons-nous ! / Tous ensemble ! — Let's mobilise! / All together!
  • Signe la pétition / Viens au rassemblement — Sign the petition / Come to the rally
  • Assez de… ! / Exigeons… ! — Enough of…! / Let's demand…!
  • Agis maintenant ! — Act now!

Pour un DÉPLIANT (informer)

  • Horaires : du mardi au dimanche, 10 h–18 h — Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Tarifs : plein tarif… / tarif réduit… — Prices: full price… / reduced price…
  • Accès : bus n° 4, arrêt… — Getting there: bus no. 4, … stop
  • À ne pas manquer : … — Not to be missed: …

Tract (suite) — l'appel à l'action

For a tract, write short, punchy lines with imperatives and a slogan — the reader must feel pushed to act. For a dépliant, write neutral, factual panels — the reader must find the information at a glance. Matching tone to purpose is half of Criterion C.
