IB ESS HL — Perspectives

At Higher Level, Topic 1.1 requires deeper analysis of environmental systems, including quantitative modelling of system inputs, outputs, and storages. HL students must demonstrate more sophisticated evaluation of how environmental systems respond to human intervention and natural change.

Higher Level students should use this topic hub as a map: start with the shared sub-topics, then follow the HL-only extensions and exam-skill links where this topic asks for deeper analysis.

1.1 FlashcardsExam technique guidePractice questions

Key concepts in Perspectives

Key Idea: People disagree about environmental issues because they have different perspectives and worldviews.
Perspective
A personal view on one specific issue (easy to change).
Worldview
A broad way of seeing the world that shapes many perspectives (slow to change).
Environmental Value System (EVS)
A worldview about how humans should interact with the environment.

What shapes perspectives & worldviews

  • Assumptions, values, beliefs
  • Culture, religion, education
  • Science and media
  • Economy and jobs
  • Personal experience

Why worldviews are hard to change

  • Linked to identity and culture
  • Develop over a long time
  • Confirmation bias
Inputs → Processes → Outputs

🌿 Ecocentric: Nature first. Protect ecosystems. Reduce consumption.

⚙️ Technocentric: Technology solves problems. Innovation. Human ingenuity.

Key Idea: Humans manage nature using laws and sustainable use.

Values surveys

  • People rate agreement with statements
  • Patterns show dominant EVS in a group

Modern environmental movement

  • Scientific evidence
  • Media and campaigns
  • Environmental disasters
Always link: values → worldview → decision/action. Explain WHY people disagree.
